Benvenuto Cellini at Château de Versailles: the new season’s event opera

Benvenuto Cellini by Berlioz at Château de Versailles: 150 artists on the Royal Opera stage for the new season’s event opera

Benvenuto Cellini, a comic-opera, describes the flamboyant destiny of the Florentine goldsmith, founder and sculptor, Benvenuto Cellini. Considered too modern and highly criticised when it was created, Benvenuto Cellini is finding today its deserved place in the composer’s oeuvre, with a top-level cast of voices.

Michel Spyres, well-known for his roles from the French repertoire and has appeared on the most prestigious international stages, will sing the role of Benvenuto Cellini for a single performance, an unmissable date which also corresponds to the 10th anniversary of the reopening of the Château de Versailles Royal Opera in September 2009!

Sir John Eliot Gardiner, an accomplished and passionate Berlioz musician, the Monteverdi Choir, and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, are presenting this iconic work in a semi-staged version, serving its brilliant and varied rhythm. A 2019 tribute to the great composer, for the 150th anniversary of his death.

This opera will take place in the most beautiful opera in the world, the Royal Opera in Château de Versailles and will be shown in the historical sets of the “Marble palace with gold highlights” created by Ciceri in 1837, rebuilt specially for this occasion and where Berlioz himself conducted a concert at the Royal Opera on Sunday 29 October 1848.
The tragic fate of the protagonist, an extraordinarily difficult first role, magnificent sets and a powerful choir, all the elements are gathered together for a landmark performance.
