Already a winner at the Concours Voix Nouvelles!

While the competition is in full swing at the Concours Voix Nouvelles, which has revealed Natalie Dessay, Stéphane Degout, Karine Deshayes, Anne Catherine Gillet, Eva Zaicik, etc., one candidate has already made a name for herself by winning first prize in another competition. Lauranne Oliva, a 23-year-old French soprano, has just won first prize and the Audience Prize at the Paris Opera Competition this weekend (ahead of Hedvig Haugerud, a Norwegian soprano, and Julie Roset, another French soprano, who took second and third prize respectively). On 8 October at 7.30pm at the Paris Opéra-Comique, she will face nine new finalists in what promises to be a tight battle, as some of these young artists are already well known to music lovers. To remain completely impartial, here is the list of the other finalists: Linsey Coppens, Lila Dufy, Emy Gazeilles, Livia Louis-Joseph-Dogué, Juliette Mey, Héloïse Poulet, Valentin Thill, Léo Vermot-Desroches and Lotte Verstaen.

The Opéra Comique breaks the waves

Lars Von Trier’s movie made a lasting impression on the Cannes Film Festival in 1996 and then on audiences around the world. Breaking the Waves has since become an opera with music by Missy Mazzoli and a libretto by Royce Vavrek. Premiered in September 2016 at Opera Philadelphia, the production received the 2017 International Opera Award for Best New Production. The opera is on at the Opéra Comique, May 28, 30 & 31, 2023 and film audiences who remember the striking images will not be surprised to discover the following warning: ‘This production includes explicit language, nudity and sexual content, some of which is violent in nature. Some scenes in this show may offend the sensibilities of the audience and in particular the youngest.”

The new face of Carmen

Joyce DiDonato was due to take on the role of Carmen in Strasbourg, but will not be taking part in the production. Elena Maximova is replacing her. Other Carmens are expected in France in the near future, such as Marie-Nicole Lemieux at the Chorégies d’Orange or, closer, the flamboyant Gaëlle Arquez, who will be on the bill at the Opéra Comique from 24 April to 4 May 2023 (in the creation hall).

Carmen goes into other hands

While Maestro Long Yu was expected with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at the Opéra Comique from 24 April to 4 May 2023 to conduct Bizet’s Carmen (in the hall where the opera was first performed), the Covid, still too virulent in China, prevented them from coming to Paris. Love being a rebellious and fickle bird, our Carmen has found her replacement and, good news, it is Louis Langrée, current director of the Opéra Comique for the first four dates and Sora Elisabeth Lee for the last two. Less well known to the general public, the young artist is nevertheless the current assistant conductor of the Orchestre de Paris under music director Klaus Mäkelä. The Orchestre des Champs-Elysées will accompany a cast dominated by the incandescent Gaëlle Arquez in the title role. Don’t’ miss it !

Paris finally gets the moon!

The production of Jacques Offenbach‘s Le Voyage dans la lune by Laurent Pelly is finally coming to the Opéra Comique, with performances from 24 January to 3 February 2023. After the huge success of Lakmé, the director returns to the Salle Favart with the multi-talented Maîtrise Populaire de l’Opéra Comique led by Franck Leguérinel who also performs as le Roi V’lan. Not to be missed!

Véronique Gens’ Human Voice

After her huge success in Gluck’s Armide at the Opéra Comique, Véronique Gens returns to a more modern tragedy in concert and on record. In January 2023, the Orchestre National de Lille, conducted by Alexandre Bloch, will support the superb soprano in Francis Poulenc’s La Voix humaine, on Wednesday 25 January at the Nouveau Siècle in Lille and on Friday 27 January 2023, in the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez at the Philharmonie de Paris. The concerts follow the expected release of the CD by Alpha on the 13th.

Horrors at the Opéra Comique

The Opéra Comique, the Parisian venue with the most original programme in the French capital, is innovating once again by presenting Little Shop of Horrors (La Petite Boutique des horreurs). Alan Menken and Howard Ashman‘s hit musical, which will be on show for the holidays from 10 to 25 December 2022, once again brings together the delirious directors Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq. Conductor Maxime Pascal (the only French winner of the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award) is the musical director with a cast that includes Marc Mauillon, Judith Fa, Lionel Peintre, Damien Bigourdan…

Street singers for a super Comique

Budding Parisian soloists who are used to singing in the shower are invited to get out of their bathroom to show off their vocal organs. In partnership with the BETC communication agency and JCDecaux, on Thursday 27 October from 10am to 7pm, the Opéra Comique is organising “It’s show(er) time”, a happening where everyone is invited to sing under a rather special shower, in the middle of the street, in a bus shelter at 24 boulevard des Italiens in Paris, which has been transformed for the occasion!

The Salle Favart specifies that “everyone remains dressed (or even in costume)” to sing Carmen, Cloclo, Pelléas, Beyoncé or even Lakmé (for the future Devieilhe!) at full voice.

The Gluck Renaissance, already back!

A real craze or a coincidence of the calendar, it seems that Gluck’s operas are arousing new interest in Paris. After Jakub Józef Orliński‘s magnificent Orfeo (at the TCE), and Julien Chauvin‘s surprising and successful exhumation of Iphigénie en Aulide (at Soissons and at the TCE), there are two titles soon to be performed that confirm a Gluck Renaissance.

On Friday 21 October 2022, the Opéra Royal de Versailles will present a concert version of Echo et Narcisse with Adriana González and Cyrille Dubois. Music lovers who like thrills will go to the Opéra Comique, which is putting on a string of exciting productions. After Sabine Devieilhe’s Lakmé, Véronique Gens takes on the role of the magician Armide in Gluck’s great masterpiece, which will be performed at the Salle Favart from 5 to 15 November 2022.

Patricia Petibon performs Massenet’s Manon at the Opéra Comique
