Lyon that laughs, Lyon that cries

As dancer Cédric Andrieux prepares to take over the director of the Lyon Opera Ballet, the institution announced that it has been forced to cancel all performances of On purge Bébé! the last Philippe Boesmans opera, initially scheduled for 5 to 17 June 2023. Following a Board of Directors meeting on 12 April, decisions were taken to limit the 2023 deficit; subsidy cuts, the energy crisis, inflation and the social crisis linked to the pension reform have impacted the activity of the Lyon Opera, as it is already the case in many French houses. In this gloomy context, let us nevertheless welcome Cédric Andrieux, who has held the position of Director of Dance at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris since 2018, after having spent nearly ten years as a dancer in Merce Cunningham’s company.

The Lyon Opera goes through the doors

From 17 March to 4 April 2023, the Opéra de Lyon is holding its festival on the theme of “Crossing the gates” with three operas on the bill. With Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro, Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle and Bluthaus (The House of Crime) by Haas and Monteverdi. It will be a question of thresholds to be crossed in order to enter a world that one does not know. Le Nozze under the musical direction of Alexandre Bloch marks the operatic debut of director Eugen Jebeleanu.

No nozze for Assayas

The Opera of Lyon announces that for personal reasons, Olivier Assayas, the well-known filmmaker, will not stage Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, scheduled from March 17 to April 4, 2023. Eugen Jebeleanu signs this new production in his place with a newcomer in the role of Marcellina, the great French mezzo-soprano Sophie Pondjiclis, on stage again with the great pleasure.
