A war of chefs in Paris?

Are the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Philharmonie, the French capital’s two great symphony concert halls, fighting it out in 2023? The line-up on both sides is very strong, with, Porte de Pantin, the Berliner Philharmoniker led by Kirill Petrenko (2 September), the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Klaus Mäkelä (6 and 7 September) and the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons (8 September) despite on Avenue Montaigne, three serious contenders such as the Wiener Philharmoniker led by Jakub Hrůša (14th), Riccardo Chailly at the helm of the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala (12th) and finally the Bayerisches Staatsorchester conducted by Vladimir Jurowski (21st) round off the calendar for an exceptional new season. François-Xavier Roth, Lahav Shani, Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Thomas Hengelbrock, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, etc. are also expected in the coming month!

Maestra, season 3!

The La Maestra International Female Conductors’ Competition has brought to the fore young talents such as laureates Rebecca Tong and Anna Sułkowska-Migoń but also Stephanie Childress. While registrations for the third edition have just opened, the date is already announced. With a grand final at the Philharmonie de Paris, the competition will take place from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 March 2024. The jury will be presided over by Nathalie Stutzmann, the only female conductor of an American orchestra.

Elisabeth’s choice in Paris

Brilliant winner of the 2021 Queen Elisabeth Competition, pianist Jonathan Fournel is still too discreetly scheduled in the major Parisian venues. The Philharmonie de Paris is now making up for this anomaly by inviting him and the Orchestre national d’Ile de France, conducted by Lio Kuokman, on Wednesday 19 April 2023 for a second Brahms concerto that promises to be very high quality!

Rattle, Salonen, Chailly, all at the Philharmonie!

January is a fruitful month for the Philharmonie de Paris, which welcomes three of the most prominent conductors. Sir Simon Rattle opens the ball on 14 and 15 January 2023 with the London Symphony Orchestra and two fine programmes, Sibelius/Bruckner then Beethoven/Stravinsky. The Orchestre de Paris meets Esa-Pekka Salonen on 25 and 26 January for the French premiere of his Organ Concerto (with Olivier Latry). Finally, the forces of La Scala de Milan led by Riccardo Chailly will be on stage at the Philharmonie on Sunday 29 January in a programme that is not Italian but Russian with Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky.

Marie-Nicole Lemieux twice an enchantress

While the Chorégies d’Orange is focusing on her Carmen this summer, Marie-Nicole Lemieux will first enchant the Philharmonie de Paris on 9 January 2023, with the ensemble Les Épopées (then on 11 January at Bozar in Brussels). They present their new programme entitled ‘Enchantress’, in which the superb mezzo tackles the great tragic heroines such as Médée, Circé or Armide by performing highlights from operas by Lully, Charpentier, Leclair, Gluck, etc.

Véronique Gens’ Human Voice

After her huge success in Gluck’s Armide at the Opéra Comique, Véronique Gens returns to a more modern tragedy in concert and on record. In January 2023, the Orchestre National de Lille, conducted by Alexandre Bloch, will support the superb soprano in Francis Poulenc’s La Voix humaine, on Wednesday 25 January at the Nouveau Siècle in Lille and on Friday 27 January 2023, in the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez at the Philharmonie de Paris. The concerts follow the expected release of the CD by Alpha on the 13th.

Concertgebouw and Philharmonie de Paris stronger

Two halls with perfect acoustic, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Philharmonie de Paris have just signed a partnership agreement built around the Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä. The teams of the current music director of the Orchestre de Paris and soon to be principal conductor of the Koninklĳk Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam will develop several projects such as exchanges between the orchestras, co-commissions and premieres of works (from Betsy Jolas, Unsuk Chin or Anders Hillborg), joint educational projects or even a joint reflection on eco-responsibility.

For music lovers, this will involve several concerts by the two ensembles in their respective cities, Paris and Amsterdam being located three hours by train from each other.

The Orchestre de Paris is relieved

Since he is persona non grata everywhere in the world except his native country, conductor Valery Gergiev finally has a replacement to conduct the Orchestre de Paris concert on 8 and 9 November 2022 at the Philharmonie de Paris.

Mikhail Pletnev will be on the podium with the orchestra alongside Janine Jansen in a modified programme. Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3 are now announced instead of the Shostakovich works.

Emotion at the Philharmonie de Paris

On 5 September 2022, the pianist and conductor Lars Vogt passed away after a long illness.

The Orchestre de chambre de Paris, which he conducted, and several of his artist friends have decided to pay tribute to him during the concert to be held tomorrow, Tuesday 4 October 2022, at the Philharmonie de Paris.

Daniel Harding will conduct the orchestra and will be joined on stage by Ian Bostridge, Paul Lewis, Christian Tetzlaff and Alban Gerhardt for a moment of sharing that will be very emotional.

Animals Invasion at the Philharmonie de Paris

Famous for its exceptional acoustics, the Philharmonie de Paris welcomes all sounds and even the cries of animals. It is a fantastic bestiary, both visual and aural, that is exhibited from 20 September 2022 to 29 January 2023.

In a playful and sumptuous setting, MUSICANIMALE offers a journey of 150 works and art objects organised according to a primer from A for Appeals to Z for Zoomorph. The sounds of the forest, the bellowing of the stag or extracts of “seroius” music accompany the wanderings of the visitor, who is seduced, amused and always surprised by the intelligence of the subject.

The exhibition’s co-curators, Marie-Pauline Martin (director of the Musée de la musique) and Jean-Hubert Martin (art historian), have chosen a playful immersion without forgetting a powerful ecological message: the future of biodiversity. Designed in partnership with the National Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Ethnography in Geneva, the exhibition is like a cabinet of curiosities where one can observe the undulations of a spider’s thread, the light dance of a whale or the endurance of a snail’s stomach. As for music, music lovers will be carried away by obvious excerpts from Messiaen, Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals and Rossini’s Duo of the Cats, or more unexpected ones from Bartók, Enescu, Saariaho and Rued Langaard…

Accessible to all audiences from the age of 6, the MUSICANIMALE exhibition has its music counterpart in the concert halls of the Philharmonie de Paris, which is organising a series of concerts entitled “Listening to the living”, including a night of the nightingale (30 March 2023).
