Never before seen at La Scala

From 6 to 22 June 2023 in Milan, the world’s most famous opera house will be hosting a masterpiece for the very first time, even though it has been performed everywhere else! Surprising as it may seem, Teatro alla Scala has never before performed Rusalka, Dvořák’s masterpiece. This will be done with Emma Dante’s new production, which will see the debut of conductor Tomáš Hanus. The title role is given to soprano Olga Bezsmertna, one of its great incumbents. Dmitry Korchak (the Prince), Okka von der Damerau (Ježibaba), Jongmin Park (Vodnik) and Elena Guseva (the foreign princess) complete the cast.

Legris in Orange with La Scala

The Teatro alla Scala is performing for the second time at the Chorégies d’Orange. After a major concert with Maestro Riccardo Chailly last season, it is now the turn of the ballet company, directed since 2020 by Manuel Legris, to perform on the vast stage of the impressive ancient theatre. On 15 July 2023, La Scala’s dancers will perform classical and contemporary ballet with Verdi Suite (choreographed by Manuel Legris), Solitude Sometimes (Philippe Kratz) and the second act of the Tchaikovsky masterpiece, Swan Lake.

Rudolf Nureyev is immortal !

A sad anniversary on 6 January 2023, as it is exactly 30 years since the great choreographer Rudolf Nureyev died at the age of 54. His choreographies are still celebrated all over the world and are still relevant today. This season, his Don Quixote will be performed in Vienna, Swan Lake at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and, at his home in the Paris Opera, an excerpt from Raymonda at the Ecole de danse Show.

Rattle, Salonen, Chailly, all at the Philharmonie!

January is a fruitful month for the Philharmonie de Paris, which welcomes three of the most prominent conductors. Sir Simon Rattle opens the ball on 14 and 15 January 2023 with the London Symphony Orchestra and two fine programmes, Sibelius/Bruckner then Beethoven/Stravinsky. The Orchestre de Paris meets Esa-Pekka Salonen on 25 and 26 January for the French premiere of his Organ Concerto (with Olivier Latry). Finally, the forces of La Scala de Milan led by Riccardo Chailly will be on stage at the Philharmonie on Sunday 29 January in a programme that is not Italian but Russian with Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky.

La Scala faces history

December 7, the day of St. Ambrose, the patron saint of the city of Milano, is the season opening date of the temple of opera, La Scala in Milan.
For 2022-2023, Dominique Meyer, Intendant and Riccardo Chailly, Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of La Scala, have chosen the masterpiece of Russian opera, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. A hymn to the freedom of a people who rise up to overthrow a tyrant, this is the second time the opera has opened the season. After the memorable edition conducted by Claudio Abbado in 1979 and directed by Jurij Ljubimov, it is Kasper Holten who signs the new production with the great Ildar Abdrazakov as Boris!

Conductors from father to son

The movie MAESTRO(S), a film by Bruno Chiche will be out on 7 December 2023 starring Yvan Attal and Pierre Arditi as two conductors, Miou-Miou, Nils Othenin-Girard and Pascale Arbillot. Caroline Anglade is also part of the cast, coached by Anne Gravoin for her role as a violinist. Yvan Attal has worked with conductors Dominique Trottein to prepare for his role.

Remake of Footnote by Israeli director and screenwriter Joseph Cedar, the film explores the challenging relationship between a father and son, both conductors, whose rivalry is exacerbated following a professional misunderstanding over the opportunity of a lifetime: conducting the orchestra of Teatro alla Scala… no less!

Witches at La Scala in Milan

7 December is not only Saint Ambrose’s Day but also the traditional date for the season opening of the temple of opera, the famous Teatro alla Scala in Milan. This 2021-2022 season, Riccardo Chailly, its musical director, has chosen to invite the witches of Verdi’s Macbeth on stage with a dream cast, as usual! Lady Macbeth is performed by Anna Netrebko (recovering from her surgery) and her weeping husband by Luca Salsi, while Ildar Abdrazakov performs as Banco (from 7 to 29 December 2021).

Manon Lescaut in David Pountney’s production is performed at the temple of opera from March 31 to April 27, 2019 with the great voice of Maria Jose Siri in the title role and Marcelo Álvarez as Des Grieux.
