The International Opera Awards 2022, founded in 2013 by Harry Hyman, a British businessman, and John Allison, editor of the British magazine Opera, were presented earlier this week at the Teatro Real in Madrid, outside the UK for the first time in their history. Sabine Devieilhe and Stéphane Degout were chosen as Best Singers of the Year. The remarkable artists are both French, so there’s plenty of national pride (and legendary arrogance) to go around!

Discover the 2016-2017 season!

The party continues at the Teatro Real in Madrid for the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the institution, and simultaneously the 20th anniversary of the reopening of the magnificent theater, that is being celebrated during the three seasons of 2016, 2017 and 2018. Everything seems to thrive for Joan Matabosch, the satisfied Artistic Director, as both the Madrid audience and music lovers around the world are delighted with the proposals made between the opening repertoire and the sound values of the lyric stage. Moreover, the theater often shows sold out (do not delay to book seats!). The beautiful program is a standing invitation to discovery.

This season, the program offers fifteen titles, more than half of them being new productions. And, uncommon fact, four operas are played for the first time in Madrid: a world premiere (La Ciudad de las mentiras by Elena Mendoza), a rare opera (Bomarzo Ginastera) but also two essential titles as Britten’s Billy Budd and Handel’s Rodelinda. The rest of the season is just as exciting.

The headlines of Italian opera, Bellini’s Norma and Verdi’s Otello are two highly anticipated masterpieces, though always difficult to achieve. The audience is also very fond of Madama Butterfly that will certainly receive much applause, as well as Verdi’s Macbeth, this season in concert version. The classical repertoire is represented by La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart, the Baroque repertoire with Handel’s Rodelinda. The Russians have the masterpiece of Rimsky-Korsakov and for the Germans, a great Wagner.

The superstars of opera are present at the Teatro Real; Cecilia Bartoli, Placido Domingo, Joyce DiDonato, Juan Diego Flórez, Franco Fagioli and superb Jonas Kaufmann for Madrid to look forward too but the real strength of the productions lies in the consistency of their always fair distributions. Curlew River is played by Ian Bostridge and Otello will be interpreted by the rare voice of Gregory Kunde. The great role of Norma is entrusted to three very different sopranos (including Mariella Devia, the legend of the song) or Rodelinda with beautiful baroque voices as Lucy Crowe, Xavier Sabata, Bejun Mehta and Sonia Prina. Mozart cannot find a better defender than Christophe Rousset, baroque director, always with an inspiring baton. He brings an exciting distribution including Karina Gauvin, Bernard Richter, Jeremy Ovenden and Sylvia Schwartz.

A new and exciting season that once again will delight both amateurs and music experts.
