]]> Are the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Philharmonie, the French capital’s two great symphony concert halls, fighting it out in 2023? The line-up on both sides is very strong, with, Porte de Pantin, the Berliner Philharmoniker led by Kirill Petrenko (2 September), the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Klaus Mäkelä (6 and 7 September) and the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons (8 September) despite on Avenue Montaigne, three serious contenders such as the Wiener Philharmoniker led by Jakub Hrůša (14th), Riccardo Chailly at the helm of the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala (12th) and finally the Bayerisches Staatsorchester conducted by Vladimir Jurowski (21st) round off the calendar for an exceptional new season. François-Xavier Roth, Lahav Shani, Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Thomas Hengelbrock, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, etc. are also expected in the coming month!

]]> 8 March is indeed Women’s Rights Day, but the ‘Les Grandes Voix’ concert series has not waited to put women in the spotlight! During the month of March 2023, it is offering two unusual and exceptional events. On Monday 6 March 2023, Nadine Sierra and Pretty Yende will share the stage at the Philharmonie de Paris in a programme simply entitled “Best Friends”. On Tuesday 21 March 2023, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées will welcome women of power with Marina Rebeka and Karine Deshayes performing excerpts from Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena, Rossini’s Elisabetta and Semiramide and finally excerpts from Bellini’s Norma.

]]> Since the beginning of the season, the Palazzetto Bru Zane, a great rediscoverer of scores (which is releasing a boxed set of 8CDs in March 2023 and a book on Augusta Holmès), has been devoting a series of concerts to 19th century French women composers: Louise Farrenc, Rita Strohl, Clémence de Grandval, Nadia and Lili Boulanger, Cécile Chaminade, Charlotte Sohy, Augusta Holmès, Mel Bonis, Sophie Gail, Marie Jaëll, Henriette Renié,…. After a festival to be held in Venice from 1 April to 17 June 2023, the highlights are expected in Paris where, as part of the Palazzetto Bru Zane’s Parisian festival, three concerts will be held, including Louise Bertin’s opera Fausto on 20 June and a symphonic concert on 23 June at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

]]> While Cherubini’s Medea is expected in Athens next April, the united forces of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles summon the spirit of M.-A. Charpentier by performing a concert version of his Medea on the stage of the Théâtre de l’avenue Montaigne. Anna Pirozzi in Athens and Véronique Gens in Paris, on Monday 27 March 2023, will perform as the infanticidal magician. The great French soprano will take on Cyrille Dubois’ Jason with Hervé Niquet and his Concert Spirituel to conduct the tragedy in music.

]]> The white smoke was eagerly awaited and it is finally Olivier Py who has been appointed Director of the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

A great theatre and opera director, actor, author, director of the Théâtre national de l’Odéon from 2007 to 2012 and of the Festival d’Avignon from 2013 to 2022, Olivier Py is well known and often appreciated by music lovers who always recognise the intelligence of his approach to libretti. His name will undoubtedly revive the lustre of the Théâtre du Châtelet, but coincidence of the calendar, his next creation will take place at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, which will host his production of Stravinsky’s The Nightingale and Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tiresias from 10 to 19 March 2023.

]]> After the Opéra Comique’s production last May, La Périchole, Jacques Offenbach‘s delightful opera buffa, is once again on stage in Paris. The Théâtre des Champs-Elysées will host a brand new production by Laurent Pelly from 13 to 27 November 2022.

After the great success of his Lakmé at the Salle Favart (with Sabine Devieilhe), the director meets the great conductor Marc Minkowski again, who has been involved in unforgettable successes such as Belle Hélène, Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein, Orphée aux Enfers, etc. With Stanislas de Barbeyrac as Piquillo, two Péricholes who share the bill, Marina Viotti (14, 20, 23, 24 and 27 November) and Antoinette Dennefeld (14, 20, 23, 24 and 27 November).

After Werther and Manon, it is now Hérodiade which is on the bill at the Auditorium-Orchestre national de Lyon on 23 November 2022 and then in Paris at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées on 25 November with an exceptional cast as Nicole Car’s Salomé takes on Etienne Dupuis as Herod and Ekaterina Semenchuk as Hérodiade in order to save the head of Jean Baptiste performed by Jean-François Borras.

]]> The Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, which is opening a great season with Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, is launching the residency of the ensemble Les Siècles and its prestigious conductor, François-Xavier Roth. The orchestra, which performs on historical instruments, will be performing three symphonic concerts, one staged opera, one opera in concert version and two concerts for young audiences and families throughout the season.

The first concert is scheduled for Friday 30 September 2022 (an 100% Stravinsky programme) and annonces highlights such as the anniversary concert on 10 January 2023 or the new production of double-bill Stravinsky’s Nightingale and Poulenc’s Mamelles de Tirésias in Olivier Py‘s eagerly awaited staging with the divine Sabine Devieilhe.
