La Monnaie-De Munt has announced the extension of its Music Director Alain Altinoglu’s mandate.

The French conductor, who has led the Brussels institution since 2016, will continue his mission alongside the new General and Artistic Director Christina Scheppelmann, who recently took office.

According to Scheppelmann—who has long known the artist—renewing his contract was a top priority from the very beginning of her tenure. “Extending his mandate was one of my very first objectives when I was appointed. La Monnaie is fortunate to have, in its Music Director, not only such a talented conductor, but also a passionate artist deeply devoted to music and opera, beloved by both the musicians and the audience,” she declared, adding that she is delighted their terms will now end at the same time.

For nearly a decade, Alain Altinoglu has continued to shape La Monnaie’s musical identity in profound ways. Under his baton, the orchestra and audiences have explored a wide range of repertoires through major opera productions, from Wagner to Poulenc. In concert, he effortlessly traverses paths from Mozart to Stravinsky, via Mahler, Berlioz and Ravel, cementing his central role in the artistic influence of La Monnaie-De Munt.

Much to the disappointment of Parisians wanted Altinoglu at the helm of the Orchestre de l’Opéra national de Paris, the continuation of his mandate ensures a stable and ambitious artistic vision for the coming seasons. A major highlight of this extension will be the opening of La Monnaie’s new season with Verdi’s Falstaff, staged by Laurent Pelly.

The eagerly awaited production is already close to sold out—a clear sign of the enduring appeal of both the French conductor and the institution.

For Alain Altinoglu at La Monnaie, it’s the end!

On February 4, 2025, the beginning of the end will unfold at La Monnaie-De Munt in Brussels. Indeed, Götterdämmerung by Richard Wagner, the final episode of the tetralogy, will be on stage till March 2, heralding the twilight of the gods.

Ingela Brimberg and Bryan Register perform as Brünnhilde and as Siegfried, while Alain Altinoglu conducts Pierre Audi’s production. Let us recall that the Wagnerian cycle was initially directed by the renowned visual artist Romeo Castellucci, but due to financial constraints, Pierre Audi’s earlier production was chosen for the final two titles.

Since January 2016, Alain Altinoglu has served as the Music Director of La Monnaie-De Munt. In 2023, the prestigious Belgian institution extended his contract until 2031.

La Monnaie all in gold in Brussels

A major event of the season, a new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen is on the cards, with the first episode of Wagner’s tetralogy on show from 24 October to 9 November 2023. La Monnaie de Bruxelles is decked out in gold with Das Rheingold, conducted as it should be by its musical director Alain Altinoglu. Romeo Castellucci, a great aesthete and an established figure on the theatre scene, is in charge of directing this new adventure. The cast includes Gábor Bretz as Wotan and Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Fricka. Next episode: Die Walküre in January 2024.

The Saint-Saëns centenary of 2021 continues to bear fruit. Postponed due to the pandemic, La Monnaie in Brussels is offering a new production of a rare gem with Henry VIII. The opera is one of its many little-known masterpieces and will benefit from the musical direction of Alain Altinoglu and the staging of Olivier Py with the excellent Lionel Lhote in the role of King Henry VIII. The performances will take place from 11 to 27 May 2023.

Stéphane Degout’s Eugene, at last!

While Covid prevented him from making his debut in the role at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Stéphane Degout will be Tchaikovsky‘s Eugene Onegin, at last! at La Monnaie in Brussels from 29 January to 14 February 2023. In Laurent Pelly‘s production, the baritone recently crowned ‘Singer of the Year’ at the International Opera Awards is partnered by Sally Matthews and Bogdan Volkov with Alain Altinoglu conducting.

The Colmar International Festival is undergoing a revolution. Directed for more than thirty years by the Russian conductor Vladimir Spivakov, the Alsatian institution has just named its new artistic director. From conductor to artistic director, Alain Altinoglu is wearing a new hat. The artist in place at the Monnaie de Bruxelles and the Hr-Sinfonieorchester will unveil the new 2023 season in February.

Damiano Michieletto’s triple

Italian director Damiano Michieletto is a very busy man especially this autumn.

On 18 October 2022, Handel’s Alcina will be premiered at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. The title role will be performed by the diva Cecilia Bartoli, who has already performed in Salzburg in 2019.
On 28 October, Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier conducted by Alain Altinoglu (with Sally Matthews, Michèle Losier, Elena Sancho-Pereg and Matthew Rose alternating with Julia Kleiter, Julie Boulianne, Ilse Eerens and Martin Winkler) will be performed at La Monnaie-De Munt in Brussels.
Finally, a new production of Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict will open the season at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, also on 28 October 2022.

Three times more operas without Carmen

While La Monnaie has been forced to cancel the performances of Bizet’s Carmen, the famous Brussels institution will reopen its doors in March 2022 with the new production of Puccini’s Il trittico. Il tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, the three operas that make up this triptych will be conducted by Alain Altinoglu and directed by Tobias Kratzer.

Adaptation and slight changes at Brussels’ La Monnaie-De Munt

The famous Brussels Opera just announced it, everything is ready to welcome the public again with just some adjustments.

One of the highlights of the season (from October 22, 2020), Korngold’s Die tote Stadt starring Marlis Petersen, Roberto Saccà and Georg Nigl has been shortened to a version of less than two hours to allow a performance without any intermission.

At the Palais des Beaux-Arts, the performance of the concert version of Lodewijk Mortelmans’ rare opera De Kinderen der Zee is postponed to a future season. Instead, Alain Altinoglu will conduct Der Schauspieldirektor, Mozart’s comedy, on November 22 & 24, 2020.
