Happy Birthday, Roberto Bolle!

Time flies! And since last Thursday, it has been marking the milestones of an exceptional career. Roberto Bolle has just celebrated his 50th birthday, with more than 33 of those years spent on the stage of La Scala di Milano.

A dancer of international stature, he quickly established himself among the great figures of ballet. As early as 2002, he performed before Queen Elizabeth II for her Jubilee, a performance broadcast by the BBC and watched worldwide. Then, two years later, he danced before Pope John Paul II during World Youth Day, further cementing his presence on the global artistic scene.

Beyond his role as Principal Dancer at La Scala Ballet, Roberto Bolle was also named Principal at the American Ballet Theatre following the farewell of his iconic partner, Alessandra Ferri. He has also been a regular guest at the prestigious Mariinsky Theatre, sharing the stage with the legendary Svetlana Zakharova, herself a star of both La Scala and the Mariinsky.

Since January 21, 1994, he has performed in both classical and contemporary productions at La Scala Ballet, continuing his career with the same intensity and passion. And at 50, he is still leading the dance!

At the same time, Roberto Bolle is the driving force behind the Roberto Bolle and Friends gala events, which have brought together ballet stars and young talents for extraordinary performances since 2008. These internationally acclaimed shows have contributed to the transmission and global influence of dance for 17 years.

This summer, the star dancer will take the stage at his gala in Rome on July 15 and 16, 2025, as well as at the Verona Arena Festival, offering audiences the chance to witness his ever-captivating performances live.

The Arena of today and tomorrow

While Cecilia Gasdia, Sovrintendente of the Fondazione Arena di Verona, is touring the major cities to present the 2024 programme of the famous Verona Arena Festival, the 2025 season has already been announced. 2024, the great Puccini year, will of course include the masterpieces Tosca, Turandot and a new Bohème, as well as the eagerly awaited Carmen, Barbiere di Siviglia and two Aida. The modern staging created for the festival’s 100th anniversary will be revived, as will the historic 1913 production with its monumental set. 2024 also marks the return of the great stars Anna Netrebko, Elena Stikhina, Clémentine Margaine, Jonas Kaufman, Roberto Alagna, Vittorio Grigolo, Ludovic Tézier, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, etc. as well as the debuts of Pretty Yende and mezzo Aigul Akhmetshina. 2025 will be a year dominated by Verdi, who will be back in force with Aida, La Traviata, Rigoletto and a new production of the legendary Nabucco. In the programme, only Carmen was not composed by the great composer!

Ludovic Tézier double strikes in Verona

The Verona Arena Festival events have been announced with some exceptional Toscas, including the one on 30 August 2024 featuring Elena Stikhina, Jonas Kaufmann and Ludovic Tézier in the role of the horrible Barone Scarpia. The superstar baritone has a surprise in store for lucky festival-goers where he performs as Amonasro in a deluxe Aida the day before. Anna Pirozzi, Gregory Kunde and Ekaterina Semenchuk all feature in the revival of the original 1913 production. The Verona story doesn’t end there, however, as Tézier will also be taking to the arena stage at the beginning of August to perform as Escamillo, the most French of bullfighters, in a Carmen extravaganza.

Before the 100th, already a record in Verona

While the Festival dell’Arena di Verona 2023 is already making news with its 100th anniversary edition, the most famous opera festival in the world announced record profits for the 2022 edition.

342,187 spectators returned to the amphitheatre generating an average revenue per evening of €575,575, the highest in the history of the Fondazione Arena di Verona. A positive balance sheet that already bodes well for an exceptional 2023 season. Booking is now open!

Jonas Kaufmann surprised Verona

Spectators at the Festival dell’Arena di Verona who were present at the incredible temple of opera on 28 August 2022 for a performance of Verdi’s Aida were in for a nice surprise. While another tenor had been announced, they were able to witness the Verona stage debut of Jonas Kaufmann as Radames. After the recitals, the superstar is performing in the Arena for the first time in a staged opera.

The Arena di Verona Festival postponed in 2021

When the 2020 Festival becomes the 2021 ! Further to the cancellation of the stage productions of 2020 Festival, the Arena di Verona Foundation announced the complete postponement of all performances in 2021.

Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Puccini’s Turandot, Verdi’s Aida, Nabucco & La Traviata will be performed next season.

Jonas Kaufmann, the most acclaimed tenor in the world will perform for the first time ever in his career in the majestic Arena di Verona set on August 15, 2021 for a Gala evening. Among the new events, one is to be mentionned, a concert version of Aida on the occasion of 150th anniversary of the opera creation.

Festival dell’Arena di Verona 2016

Is it necessary to introduce the Arena di Verona Festival? For over 100 years, every summer in the Roman amphitheater, the opera productions remain fabulous. Under the stars and in the warmth of the Italian nights, the 2016 Festival program presents, as usual, the big hits of the repertory. Although the organizers take their time to announce the cast distributions, we can trust in this great institution that always engages the greatest artists or wait a little longer to buy tickets (knowing that the best seats always go first).

After the splendor of the centenary celebrations, the Arena regains its stride with six productions: five operas and a ballet evening. The sublime dancer Roberto Bolle returns with his “Friends” to the delight of many fans and spectators. The new program is specifically designed for the arena stage, reputed to be the largest in the opera world. Building on the success two years running, this evening full of surprise has been scheduled on July 18 to offer a new chance to the audience that was unable to attend the previous representations. You should book seats without delay because demand is already strong!
In 2016, the festival opens with the return of Carmen and the breathtaking stage setting of Franco Zeffirelli. All of Spain is present in this show which is a classic of its genre, with a beautiful fidelity to the libretto. Another great production from the Verona Arena, Verdi’s Aida, is signed by Gianfranco de Bosio who reproduces the historical production of the opening of the Festival in 1913. Aida is an opera perfectly suited for the immensity of the plateau that, however, has a way to create a more intimate ambiance. Hugo de Ana has managed to recreate the atmosphere of the Parisian salons where the plot of La Traviata unfolds, the masterpiece of masterpieces.

The last two productions once again appeal to the wonderful Franco Zeffirelli who always flirts with the grandiose. Puccini’s Turandot is one of those operas where the audience expects extraordinary productions. With Verdi’s Il Trovatore, the Arena di Verona Festival offers another colorful stage setting that beautifully suits the vastness of the stage.

The 2016 edition is shaping up to become yet another page in the beautiful history of the Festival that remains an absolute must in the world of classical music.
