In Dresden, Reconciliation After Destruction

The city of Dresden, once considered the cultural jewel of Germany, suffered immense losses during the devastating bombings of February 13–15, 1945.

Eighty years later, with Dresden fully restored to its former glory, this somber anniversary will be marked by one of the most anticipated concerts of the season at the Dresden Philharmonie. On February 13, 2025, an emblematic work will be performed under the baton of Sir Donald Runnicles: Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem. This masterpiece has been premiered in 1962 for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral (also severely damaged during World War II). Deeply anti-militarist, Britten envisioned uniting three singers from different nations—Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, English tenor Peter Pears, and German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau—to symbolize reconciliation. Following in their footsteps, Sara Jakubiak, Thomas Atkins, and Russell Braun will take the stage on February 13 to embody renewal, hope, and peace.

Rarely has an opera production been so highly praised by critics and embraced by the public. Co-produced by the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, and the Opéra national de Paris, Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten, directed by Deborah Warner, is scheduled for five exceptional performances at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma from October 11 to 19, 2024. Tenor Allan Clayton reprises what seems to be the role of his life in the perfect portrayal of Peter Grimes. Sophie Bevan, Simon Keenlyside, and Jacques Imbrailo complete the brilliant cast.

Having been acclaimed by the press, from 2 to 14 May 2024 La Monnaie in Brussels returns to the sensational staging of Britten‘s The Turn of the Screw by Andrea Breth, regarded as one of the greatest ambassadors of German theatre. The intrigues at House Bly with strange ghosts and a few apparitions will torment in the role of the Governess, Sally Matthews, the superb soprano who confirms her affinity with the world of her compatriots, Britten as composer and the writer Henry James who first wrote the novel. Ed Lyon and Julian Hubbard complete the cast led by conductor Antonio Méndez.

Marie-Laure Garnier tells the story of the Rape

A major premiere at the Opéra National du Capitole de Toulouse, which, from 23 to 30 May 2023, is bringing a great masterpiece by Britten into its repertoire. The Rape of Lucretia, a pocket opera created in 1946 at the Glyndebourne Festival, is a poignant work that will be directed by Anne Delbée and conducted by Marius Stieghorst with the Orchestre national du Capitole. Alongside Agnieszka Rehlis (Lucretia) and Duncan Rock (Tarquinius), Cyrille Dubois, the male chorus of the tragedy, gives the line to Marie-Laure Garnier. The soprano, an excellent recitalist but still too rare on the opera stage, performs as the female chorus. An opportunity not to be missed!
