]]> A major work by Handel returns to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées for only five performances, from February 6 to 15, 2025. Semele, the oratorio perfectly suited to staging, was last seen in Paris in 2004 under the baton of Marc Minkowski with direction by David McVicar. This time, the highly anticipated production is entrusted to Oliver Mears, the current director of London’s Royal Ballet and Opera, while the renowned baroque conductor Emmanuelle Haïm will lead the orchestra.

However, the main draw for music lovers is undoubtedly the cast: Pretty Yende, the celebrated soprano, will make her role debut as Semele, a part known for its demanding range and intricate vocal lines. She will be joined by tenor Ben Bliss, also making his debut as Jupiter, Alice Coote as Juno, and Carlo Vistoli, a rising countertenor, in the brief role of Athamas.

]]> Carlo Vistoli, one of the few Italian countertenors, has just been recognized by the San Francisco Opera by winning the 2024 Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Emerging Stars Competition. After recently winning the “Abbiati” Prize from the Italian music critics, this is another accolade for Vistoli, who made his San Francisco debut in the role of Arsace in Handel‘s Partenope. Europeans will soon be able to applaud him at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where, from September 26 to October 5, 2024, he will star in Cesti’s L’Orontea, directed by Robert Carsen and conducted by Giovanni Antonini. He is also expected in Paris at the Salle Gaveau on November 9 for a recital before taking the stage at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, where he will star in a new production of Handel’s Semele (from February 6 to 15, 2025).
