A last-minute change of venue did not prevent the Voix des Outre-mer Ile-de-France final (originally scheduled to take place at the Ile-de-France region headquarters in Saint-Ouen) from taking place. As the Ile-de-France regional executive was forced to cancel all the events scheduled for the evening of 3 July 2023, the candidates, members of the jury and all the organisers were hosted behind closed doors in a rehearsal room in the basement of the Opéra Bastille. Thanks to social networks, the event was followed by spectators who had stayed at home. For this new session, 15 candidates competed brilliantly.

Winona Berry, a young mezzo from Saint-Barthélemy, won first prize with flying colours, singing Stéphano’s aria “Que fais-tu, blanche tourterelle”, taken from Roméo et Juliette (Gounod’s opera was performed the same evening, a few floors up, in the Bastille’s main auditorium). Representing Martinique, Julienne Mahailet took second prize by performing Gershwin’s famous ‘Summertime’, while Alice Ferrière (La Réunion) won third prize with her perilous aria ‘Amour viens rendre à mon âme’ (Gluck/Berlioz). A mention of encouragement was awarded to Hereiti and Laura Suire. The Tahitian twins performed a charming barcarolle from Offenbach’s Contes d’Hoffmann. As the Voix des Outre-mer competition is open to all talents, Guynel Eliza (Martinique) won the ‘C’est pas classique’ prize. Two other winners were awarded the Prix Amis des Voix des Outre-mer (Christiane Eda-Pierre Prize), honouring the talents of Korean soprano Sang Ah Yoon (second nominee) and Fanny Valentin (first nominee), a stratospheric soprano who sang the first aria from The Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute, Mozart).

The first of the finals launches the sixth edition of the Voix des Outre-mer competition, which will culminate at the Paris Opéra on 23 February 2024.

As the fifth edition of the Concours des Voix des Outre-mer continues its search for a new winner (after Mayotte, Reunion Island will host the competition on 26 November before Martinique, on 15 December 2022), its president Fabrice di Falco has just announced a long-awaited partnership with the Opéra national de Paris. Indeed, the great French institution, under the impulse of its general director Alexander Neef, has undertaken a new project “L’Opéra en Guyane“ to promote dance and opera beyond the Hexagon, which the VOM competition has been doing for the past five years.

A new mutual commitment will allow selected Voix des Outre-mer candidates access to masterclasses led by professional singers who have trained at the Académie de l’Opéra National de Paris. Fabrice di Falco said: “We are proud to allow young people from all over the world to perform on the prestigious stage of the Opéra National de Paris each year for the national final of our competition. I am very grateful to the Paris National Opera, its director Alexander Neef and the director of the Opera Academy Myriam Mazouzi for this strong signal given today. The more people there are to defend this ambitious vision, the more the Overseas Territories will be the pride of the national and international opera scene.

It is always good to remember the importance of Singing Competitions in the career of young artists who can become better known to professionals and the public. While the final of the Voix des Outre-mer competition is scheduled on 10 January 2022 at the Opéra national de Paris, former winners have just made a name for themselves at the Concours Opéra Jeunes Espoirs Raymond Duffaut which took place in Avignon last October 2021. Indeed, the Prix Jeune Espoir was won by Auguste Truel, baritone, while Livia Louis Joseph Dogué, soprano, and Axelle Saint-Cirel, mezzo-soprano, won the Prix des Étudiants and the Prix Club Soroptimist International France Sud-Est (ex-aequo with Marion Bauwens, soprano). The jury awarded Eugénie Joneau, mezzo-soprano, the Revelation Prize and Juliette Mey, the Young Talent Prize. The 21-year-old mezzo-soprano also received the Prize for the best performer of the Italian repertoire and the Audience Prize. Adrian Autard tenor, Bruno Khouri baritone and Mathilde Guedj soprano also received awards. Another competition took place in October, in Angers. The Georges Liccioni International Competition noticed Héloïse Poulet soprano and Elsa Roux-Chamoux mezzo, by awarding them the 1st and 2nd Grand Prix. A Special Jury Prize was awarded to Floriane Derthe soprano and the French Melody Prize to James Williams baritone. Gabrielle Savelli mezzo and Mathilde Lemaire soprano also received awards. This competition was created in 2016 in honour of the great French tenor Georges Liccioni and the very first President of the Jury, Mrs Christiane Eda-Pierre, Martinique native and immortal Voix des Outre-mer.
