The Opéra de Nice breaks the Glass once again!

Bertrand Rossi, the brilliant and astute director of the Opéra de Nice, made a bold statement at the start of his tenure on the French Riviera by staging a major work, rarely seen in France.

In 2021, Philip Glass’s Akhnaten has been performed on the French Riviera, winning both critical and public acclaim. The American composer Philip Glass, one of the leading figures of minimalist music, wrote a trilogy of operas on “men who changed the world in which they lived through the power of their ideas.”

By bringing together emerging artists such as Robert Wilson and Lucinda Childs, the first part, Einstein on the Beach (composed in 1976), caused a sensation and marked its era. After Akhnaten, Bertrand Rossi has outpaced the Paris Opera by programming Satyagraha for the very first time in France since its creation!

While the “Grande Boutique” is preparing a production staged by Bobbi Jene Smith for April 2026, Nice once again calls on the legendary Lucinda Childs, who will take on both direction and choreography. On October 3, 5, and 7, 2025, Léo Warynski will conduct the chorus and orchestra of the Opéra de Nice, just as he did in 2021, with a cast featuring tenor Sahy Ratia as Gandhi and Julie Robard-Gendre, also present in 2021.

An ode to peace and humanity, Satyagraha draws inspiration from Gandhi’s journey and his concept of non-violent resistance, while evoking great figures such as the writer Leo Tolstoy, the poet Rabindranath Tagore, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. The entire Opéra de Nice company will then head to the Philharmonie de Paris for a concert version of Akhnaten, which is already sold out! The Opéra de Nice Continues to Inspire Dreams

Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů had a deep connection to France, where he settled in 1923. His first opera, Juliette ou la Clé des songes, was completed in Nice (between the Cimiez hills and Port Lympia) and premiered in Czech at the Národní Divadlo in Prague, though the original version was written in French.

It is only fitting that the Côte d’Azur’s premier opera house, the Opéra de Nice, will stage a new production of this rarely performed masterpiece on March 11, 13, and 15, 2025. Following the success of Rusalka, directors Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil return to Nice, using the city’s iconic landmarks as the backdrop for the opera (the train station, the Matisse Museum, the beach at Hôtel Amour, etc.). A dreamlike setting for this surreal fable, where the talented Valentin Thill takes on the role of Michel opposite his dream Juliette, portrayed by Ilona Revolskaya. The musical direction will be in the capable hands of Dutch conductor Antony Hermus.

The Olympic Games commandeer the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Opéra de Nice

Paris is the capital of the 2024 Olympic Games, but music lovers are not left out of the equation at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Opéra de Nice. Along with Vivaldi‘s L’Olimpiade, which is very much in the news, the same title will be performed from 30 April to 4 May 2024 at the Opéra de Nice and from 20 to 29 June 2024 at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. Jean-Christophe Spinosi, the renowned Vivaldian conductor, will conduct both productions. While Eric Oberdorff‘s staging of the opera will occupy the entire theatre in Nice, Jakub Jòzef Orliński and Marina Viotti share the bill in Emmanuel Daumas‘s production in Paris. Whether in the capital or on the Côte d’Azur, with the same title in two productions, one thing is certain: there will be sport even at the opera!

Avignon, Nice and Bordeaux in the same seas

Rusalka, Dvořák‘s superb but rarely performed masterpiece, is the title chosen for the second edition of Opéras au Sud, the regional initiative for opera production. Thanks to a co-production with Arsud, the Opéras de Marseille, Nice, Toulon and with the support of the City of Avignon, Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil‘s production will premiere on 13 October 2023 at the Opéra Grand Avignon before coming to the Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur (from 26 to 30 January 2024) during this 2023-2024 season. Audiences in the south of France will have the chance to discover the story of the undine Rusalka, inspired by Andersen‘s fairytale The Little Mermaid.

Laurent Pelly‘s superb production thrilled audiences at the Opéra Comique in Paris, and now Lakmé, Léo Delibes’s absolute masterpiece, is on the bill at the Opéra de Nice for three exceptional performances on 29 September, 1 and 3 October 2023 with a new cast. Kathryn Lewek, who made a big impression last season in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, returns to the Côte d’Azur capital to sing the aria of the bells and perform as Lakmé, another iconic role. Thomas Bettinger (Gérald) will only have eyes for her, jealously protected by Nilakantha, her father, performed by Jean-Luc Ballestra. Jacques Lacombe directs.

Scheduled to open the season in 2020, Philip Glass’ Akhnaten, the masterpiece of 20th century opera, will be presented on the stage of the Opéra de Nice on 12, 14 and 16 November 2021, in the presence of the public. Bertrand Rossi, the new director of the Opéra de Nice, will inaugurate his mandate one year later with this sublime production by Lucinda Childs, which has already been seen online. Dancers, singers, musicians, all the forces of the Opéra de Nice are called upon and surround a magnificent cast: Fabrice Di Falco and Julie Robard-Gendre in the roles of Akhnaten and Nefertiti as well as Patrizia Ciofi as Queen Tye and Léo Warynski as conductor. Philip Glass’ Akhnaten, with its hypnotic rhythms, has already won over audiences around the world and is being performed for the very first time in France.

The 2021-2022 season of the Opéra de Nice announced under the sign of “renewal” in the words of its general director Bertrand Rossi, offers a rich and innovative program “adapted to all”.

You will find: 12 titles, new artistic proposals, 6 new productions, 1 opera in concert version, 2 world premieres, 2 operettas, 3 contemporary shows and a participative opera in world premiere with the children of Nice schools.

The opera season will begin in full force on November 12 with Akhnaten, Philip Glass’ masterpiece, in the production broadcast online during the previous season and viewed by thousands of spectators…

Lionel Bringuier named Opéra de Nice’s new Associate Artist

The talented conductor Lionel Bringuier born in Nice has been named Associate Artist by his hometown. During the 19/20 season, he will conduct 5 concerts with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice. For the first ones on September 26 and 27, 2019, great pianist Hélène Grimaud joins to perform Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G.
