Thésée versus Médée in Europe

After Psyché in 2022, Christophe Rousset, the great specialist in Lully’s operas, returns to Thésée, the composer’s third lyric tragedy. With the Talens Lyriques and the Namur Chamber Choir, the conductor has brought together the finest French singers with Mathias Vidal and above all the great voice of Karine Deshayes, who will perform as the role of Medea, in a concert version at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna on 1 March 2023, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels on 12 March and finally at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées on 22 March.

Brussels focuses on the Czechs

As the Czech Republic takes over the presidency of the European Union for six months in July 2022, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels is taking advantage of this to highlight Czech artists and composers in its 2022-2023 season.

Nine musical events will be held during which Jan Kučera and the Prague Philharmonia, the Pavel Haas Quartet and the Collegium 1704 will be performed, as well as Magdalena Kožená, Hana Blažíková, Václav Luks, Lukáš Vondráček and the Czech Philharmonic (with Semyon Bychkov and Gautier Capuçon).

Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes will perform Janáček and Dvořák, while Magdalena Kožená will perform Arianna has a Problem, based on Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna, which the Czech composer Marko Ivanović dedicated to his compatriot.

Les Beaux-Arts celebrated in Brussels

Brussels is a little paradise for music lovers with two emblematic places, La Monnaie-De Munt and the Palais des Beaux-Arts, which is celebrating its centenary this year. On 4 April 1922, the construction of a brand new building bringing together all the arts under one roof was officially recorded. The house has been inaugurated on 4 May 1928. Today, with a musical programme that is always of a high standard, a dozen artists have been invited to create works for the anniversary, which will be exhibited as part of the “Palais Project” from 1 April to 21 July 2022.

Intense Igor Levit

Having just made a name for himself on the recording front with the release of a remarkable CD, the German-Russian pianist Igor Levit is performing in Brussels (at Bozar) and then in Berlin, in particular to defend a score that is too often neglected. Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues are 24 miniatures full of contrasts between melancholy, nervousness, sorrow and bitter irony. An adventure of two and a half hours to be experienced intensely!

Jean Rondeau performs the silence

While his recording of the Goldberg Variations is due to be released on 11 February 2022, Jean Rondeau will be performing Bach’s masterpiece in the prestigious Salle Henry Le Boeuf at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels on 12 February 2022. In the press kit he says: « I think I will work on the Goldberg Variations for the rest of my life. It’s an exercise that you have to keep coming back to if you want to grasp its hidden truth. Its vulnerability too. For it is an ode to silence. »

The new Director General of the Centre for Fine Arts

Brussels’ famous cultural complex, the Palais des Beaux-Arts, today welcomes its new Director General. Appointed last October, Sophie Lauwers has held several positions within the institution. As an Exhibition Coordinator and then Director of Exhibitions, she has always sought to build synergies between classical and contemporary art. Along with La Monnaie, Bozar is the leading music institution go the European capital.
