Happy Birthday, Roberto Bolle!

Time flies! And since last Thursday, it has been marking the milestones of an exceptional career. Roberto Bolle has just celebrated his 50th birthday, with more than 33 of those years spent on the stage of La Scala di Milano.

A dancer of international stature, he quickly established himself among the great figures of ballet. As early as 2002, he performed before Queen Elizabeth II for her Jubilee, a performance broadcast by the BBC and watched worldwide. Then, two years later, he danced before Pope John Paul II during World Youth Day, further cementing his presence on the global artistic scene.

Beyond his role as Principal Dancer at La Scala Ballet, Roberto Bolle was also named Principal at the American Ballet Theatre following the farewell of his iconic partner, Alessandra Ferri. He has also been a regular guest at the prestigious Mariinsky Theatre, sharing the stage with the legendary Svetlana Zakharova, herself a star of both La Scala and the Mariinsky.

Since January 21, 1994, he has performed in both classical and contemporary productions at La Scala Ballet, continuing his career with the same intensity and passion. And at 50, he is still leading the dance!

At the same time, Roberto Bolle is the driving force behind the Roberto Bolle and Friends gala events, which have brought together ballet stars and young talents for extraordinary performances since 2008. These internationally acclaimed shows have contributed to the transmission and global influence of dance for 17 years.

This summer, the star dancer will take the stage at his gala in Rome on July 15 and 16, 2025, as well as at the Verona Arena Festival, offering audiences the chance to witness his ever-captivating performances live.

Venetian Curtain Rises in Rome

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma opens its new season on November 27, 2024, at the Teatro Costanzi.

Unsurprisingly, Verdi, Italy’s greatest opera composer, was chosen for the occasion, with Simon Boccanegra, an opera set in Venice. The almost entirely Italian cast includes Eleonora Buratto, born in Mantua, Luca Salsi and Michele Pertusi, both from Parma and nearby areas, as well as Romanian tenor Stefan Pop. Michele Mariotti, the current music director of the institution and a native of Urbino near Pesaro, will conduct the performance, with this new production staged by renowned English director Richard Jones.

New developments in Berlin, Rome and Dubai

While Martina Franca mourns the death of the President of the Paolo Grassi Foundation (organiser of the Festival della Valle d’Itria), Berlin has chosen Aviel Cahn, the current General Director of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, to lead the Berlin Deutsche Oper from the 2026-2027 season. Dubai Opera also has a new General Director in Paolo Petrocelli, previously Director of the Stauffer Academy in Cremona. But it is to Rome that all conductors’ roads lead, as Daniel Harding has just been appointed Direttore Musicale dell’Orchestra e del Coro dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. His five-year contract will begin in October 2024. He succeeds Antonio Pappano, who has held the post since 2005 and is now Director Emeritus.

Fabio Sartori cancels again!

After having cancelled his appearance at the Chorégies d’Orange last summer, at the Arena of Verona and after his defection in La Gioconda at La Scala in Milan, the Italian tenor Fabio Sartori, unavailable, will not be on the stage of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome where he was supposed to perform as Radames either. Verdi’s Aida will be performed from 31 January to 12 February 2023 with Gregory Kunde replacing him.

Two new masterpieces in Rome

On 9, 10 and 11 November 2022, Roman audiences at the Parco della Musica will visit two pure masterpieces of classical music.

Antonio Pappano conducts Bruckner’s final symphony (No. 9) and in the first half, the superb violinist Lisa Batiashvili performs Beethoven‘s Concerto with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

Ai Weiwei’s only opera in Rome

Tonight sees the premiere of a highly anticipated opera in Rome. Running from 22 to 31 March 2022 at the Teatro dell’Opera, the new production of Puccini’s Turandot is by Ai Weiwei. One of the most famous contemporary stage artists is making his directorial debut and says it will be his first and only experience. Another highlight is that Oksana Lyniv, the Ukrainian conductor and the first woman to be appointed to the directorship of an opera house (Teatro Communale in Bologna) in Italy, is conducting.

Romeo’s Passion moved

It was to be one of the highlights of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma’s season, but in agreement with director Romeo Castellucci, the performances of Bach’s Matthäus-Passion scheduled for 10-13 April have been postponed until 2024. Due to the continuing pandemic, the project for the production directed by James Conlon could not be completed. From 19 April 2022, Rome’s opera house hosts another eagerly awaited production with Bellini’s I puritani sung by Jessica Pratt, Lawrence Brownlee and Francesco Demuro.

Francesco da Palermo a Roma

Rome’s Teatro dell’Opera has just announced the name of its new artistic director. In choosing Francesco Giambrone, the Italian institution has acquired a great professional who has already revived the Teatro Massimo in Palermo where he has been in post since 2014. He leaves his hometown of Palermo, where he leaves Music Director Omer Meir Wellber, to work, from 1 January 2022, with conductor Michele Mariotti in Rome.

Rome Opera House is open!

Rome’s Teatro dell’Opera opens its autumn season on October 18, 2020 with a rare opera by Mozart, Zaide.

The new production, directed by Graham Vick and conducted by the music director of the Teatro dell’Opera, Daniele Gatti, is performed by the charming and precious soprano Chen Reiss along with Paul Nilon, Juan Francisco Gatell and Markus Werba, among others.

The city of Rome pays homage to Ennio Morricone

The great Italian composer passed away this summer and yet, his name and his music canno’t disappear. The city of Rome where he was born decided to rename the Auditorium Parco della Musica which is now called the Auditorium Parco Della Musica “Ennio Morricone”.

A beautiful tribute to one of the major figures of 20th and 21st century music.
