Wagner in Dresden while waiting for Strauss

Since 21 January 2024, the Semperoper in Dresden has been staging a revival of Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde under the musical direction of Christian Thielemann, marking an eagerly awaited debut for Klaus Florian Vogt in the role of Tristan. After an absence of more than ten years, Marco Arturo Marelli‘s production, first performed in 1995, will run until 3 February 2024. But another event will soon be taking place at the Semperoper in Dresden. Richard Strauss, another of Dresden’s great composers, will be in the spotlight from 27 March to 7 April 2024, as part of the Richard Strauss-Tagen in der Semperoper. During these Richard Strauss Days, a number of major titles are scheduled, including the impressive Elektra (intelligently directed by Barbara Frey) and Die Frau ohne Schatten, another great masterpiece where Christian Thielemann‘s direction is eagerly awaited with a luxury cast.

Christoph unchained conducts Strauss’s Waltz in Geneva

The Grand Théâtre de Genève is preparing to host the event production of its season. From 13 to 26 December 2023, Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier is conducted by Jonathan Nott, Artistic and Musical Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande leading his orchestra, with a top-class cast. The delicate Swedish soprano Maria Bengtsson performs as the Feldmarschallin opposite Michèle Losier as Octavian, Mélissa Petit as Sophie and Matthew Rose as Baron Ochs, but what really catches the eye is the name of the director: it is Christoph Waltz, the famous actor from Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, who is offering Opera Ballet Vlaanderen a new production based on his 2013 premiere.

Strauss for the first time in her career!

Martha Argerich, the legendary pianist, has waited for Renaud Capuçon‘s proposal to perform Richard Strauss‘ Sonata for Violin and Piano for the very first time in her career. When asked why now? she replies: “Simply because I’ve never been asked before!” The concert will take place in Aix on 23 April 2022 at the Grand Théâtre de Provence as part of the Aix-en-Provence Easter Festival and two days later at Paris’ Philharmonie.

Rare Richard Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten at the TCE

Rarely performed, one of Richard Strauss’s great masterpieces, Die Frau ohne Schatten (La Femme sans ombre) will be conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, on February 17, 2020 (at 6.30 p.m.).

At the head of the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, the great chef, current musical director of the New York Metropolitan Opera, has built a clever cast with Elza van den Heever, Lise Lindstrom and Michaela Schuster as well as Stephen Gould and Michael Volle. An event that every Straussian will surely not miss!

One of the major events of the Metropolitan Opera 2019-2020 season is the beautiful Robert Carsen’s production of Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier revival performed from December 13, 2019 to January 4, 2020.
