While the madness of Handel’s Orlando takes over the stage at the Théâtre du Châtelet until February 1, 2025, the renowned Parisian venue reflects on the highlight of its 2024 season.

The musical Les Misérables made a triumphant comeback, attracting 98,653 spectators. A packed house for all 52 performances, each greeted with standing ovations, highlights the public’s enthusiasm. The production will go on tour across France in the spring of 2026 before returning to the Théâtre du Châtelet. New performances are already scheduled for the 2026-2027 season.

Orlando’s Madness at the Châtelet

Since Olivier Py took over its reins, the Théâtre du Châtelet has been reconnecting with successful productions. Following the frenzy of Les Misérables, a true hero in the grip of madness will grace the legendary Parisian stage from January 23 to February 2, 2025. Handel’s powerful opera Orlando will be conducted by Christophe Rousset (a prestigious new regular at the venue after a revival of Così fan tutte last season) leading Les Talens Lyriques, with a stellar Handelian cast. Siobhan Stagg, Elizabeth DeShong, Giulia Semenzato, and Riccardo Novaro will accompany the madness of Orlando, portrayed by Katarina Bradić. The highly anticipated staging by Jeanne Desoubeaux, with its museum-like aesthetic, promises to captivate.

Les Misérables are back in Paris

A hit on Broadway, in London, and on the big screen with over 130 million viewers worldwide, the musical Les Misérables returns to Paris from November 20, 2024, to January 2, 2025, at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

Let’s remember that this record-breaking masterpiece premiered at the Palais des Sports in Paris in 1980. Since then, despite a revival at the Mogador Theater in 1991, the show had not returned to a Parisian stage.

For this major comeback, an entirely new production will be presented in French, directed by Ladislas Chollat. On this occasion, the creators, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, have reworked the score from the original and the English version.

Thomas Jolly cœur de Comique

While performances of Pascal Dusapin’s Macbeth Underworld have just ended at the Opéra Comique, its director Thomas Jolly is not leaving the Salle Favart, as the production of Offenbach’s Fantasio will be revived from 13 to 23 December 2023. Premiered in 2017 at the Théâtre du Châtelet during the renovation of the Opéra-Comique, this production marked his very first operatic engagement. The show returns to the venue that inspired it, starring the superb Gaëlle Arquez as Fantasio and the no less exceptional Jodie Devos as Princess Elsbeth.

Così fan tutte transgenerational at the Châtelet

Dmitri Tcherniakov‘s production opened the debates this summer at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. By offering the roles to singers in their fifties, the director proposed a radical version of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. From 2 to 22 February 2024, audiences at the Théâtre du Châtelet will be able to discover his work, with a special treat for older audiences who will remember that in 1992, on this same stage, the young tenor Rainer Trost was Ferrando in the opera directed and conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. 32 years later, he takes on the role once again. This time, Christophe Rousset conducts Les Talens Lyriques.

All of Schubert at the Châtelet

The great baroque conductor Christophe Rousset, who is very much on top of his game at the head of his Talens Lyriques, is conducting a complete set of Schubert’s symphonies at the Théâtre du Châtelet in three concerts, on 27 January 2023 (Symphonies Nos. 2, 4 & 6), 29 January (Symphonies Nos. 1, 3 & 8) and 31 January (Symphonies Nos. 5 & 9). This All-Schubert’s symphonies concert is performed for the first time by the Talens Lyriques.

Warner’s Messiah at Paris Châtelet :

The great British director Deborah Warner, after the superb success of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Opéra Comique and Britten’s Billy Bud at the Teatro Real in Madrid, returns to the Théâtre du Châtelet, where she staged a perfect Beethoven’s Fidelio in 2002. From 19 to 29 January 2022, she will stage Messiah, Handel’s famous oratorio, with a beautiful cast (Anna Devin, Christine Rice, Allan Clayton and Christopher Purves) and the Orchestra and Chorus of the Opéra de Lyon conducted by Stefano Montanari.

The essential Concours Voix des Outre-mer is back in France

While the Ile-de-France Final has just taken place in Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Concours Voix des Outre-mer announces the next dates of the third edition (18 November final Guadeloupe, 25 November Guyana, 3 December Reunion Island, 9 December Mayotte, 17 December Martinique, with selections in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, New Caledonia and French Polynesia still awaiting for the confirmation of dates).

Fabrice di Falco and Julien Leleu are leading this competition, which highlights the voices of the French Overseas Territories, particularly in the news this summer, following the death of Christiane Eda-Pierre.

After Marie-Laure Garnier and Aslam Safla, the next winner will be chosen at the Paris National Opera in January 2021.
