Puccini gets ahead and catches up in Zürich

2024 is sure to be a great Puccini year to mark the hundredth anniversary of his death. The Opernhaus Zürich has decided not to wait, programming La rondine, a delicate masterpiece that will be performed for the very first time in Switzerland! From 17 September 2023, the sensitive Ermonela Jaho and the magnificent Benjamin Bernheim will be Magda and Ruggero, the heroes of the opera, in Christof Loy‘s new production and with Marco Armiliato conducting. A historic event?

After Brussels, Rachmaninov in Zurich

While the Bozar in Brussels opens the ball of the Rachmaninov 2023 festivities (on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth), the Opernhaus Zürich and the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich are joining forces for a concert cycle that begins on 12 February 2023, at the Opera House. The Piano Concerto No. 3 will be performed by Yefim Bronfman. On 29 and 30 March, the Tonhalle will host Yuja Wang in Concerto No. 2. On this occasion, the music directors of the two institutions, Gianandrea Noseda and Paavo Järvi, who have been friends for many years, will share the performances as well as their respective orchestras (Philharmonia Zürich and Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich).

War and Peace in March 2022

The war in Ukraine has had many repercussions on the world of culture and especially on classical music. In addition to the temporary withdrawal of Anna Netrebko, the cancellation of Denis Matsuev’s concerts, the resignation of Valery Gergiev and, more surprisingly, Tugan Sokhiev’s, musical director of the Bolshoi in Moscow and of the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, it is now the Teatro Real that has announced the cancellation of the Bolshoi Ballet’s appearance next May. On the stage of the Madrid theatre, during the last performance of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung, Siegfried’s body was wrapped in the Ukrainian flag. Following the example of the Real, to show their support for the Ukrainian people, many Western institutions are organising concerts for peace, such as the Zurich Opera House, which invits Thomas Hampson, Benjamin Bernheim, Nadezhda Karyazina, Rebeca Olvera, George Petean and Lawrence Brownlee this Tuesday 11 March 2022 to raise funds to go to the «Schweizerisches Rotes Kreuz» («Swiss Red Cross»). This financial contribution is intended to provide direct help in this humanitarian emergency.

Talented director Sebastian Baumgarten is back at the Zürich Opera to direct a new production of a oratorio by Handel.

Belshazzar directed by Laurence Cummings is premiered on November 3, 2019 and stars tenor Mauro Peter in the title role and sensational Jakub Józef Orliński as Cyrus.
