During the 2016-2017 season the renowned Staatsoper unter den Linden is still in residence in the beautiful Schiller Theater, but the announced reopening of the historic hall on the famous avenue of Berlin does not prevent a rush to the German capital to admire the work of Daniel Barenboim. The image of the great artist is now associated with the prestigious institution and all music lovers are grateful for his always exceptional program. This season the conductor leads a number of productions as varied as Fidelio, The Pearl Fishers, Elektra, Macbeth or Parsifal. At the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater, the great conductors follow one another on stage. Zubin Mehta leads Die Frau ohne Schatten by Richard Strauss, Simon Rattle, The Damnation of Faust by Berlioz the Kata and Kabanová with Janácek and baroque star René Jacobs,leads his artists in Purcell’s King Arthur, a highly anticipated event.

 

Eight new productions are scheduled on the 2016-2017 season, including one that particularly represents the event of the year. The incredible staging masterpiece of Strauss’s Elektra by Patrice Chéreau moves to Berlin with almost all of the original cast of singers/actors. The staging of La Damnation de Faust is also highly anticipated because it is signed by iconoclast director Terry Gilliam with, once again, a very attractive distribution (Charles Castronovo, Magdalena Kozená and Florian Boesch). The Pearl Fishers, another masterpiece of Bizet is entrusted to the poetic universe of the great filmdirector Wim Wenders. The divine Olga Peretyatko sings the role of Leila.

 

Of course, the big names of opera succeed on stage at the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater as Angela Gheorghiu in true diva Tosca, the true artist Eva-Maria Westbroek in Kata Kabanová, Dorothea Röschmann as the sensitive Countess of Nozze di Figaro and for the gentlemen, the inevitable Plácido Domingo in Macbeth or Piotr Beczala, Erwin Schrott, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo and Max Emanuel Cenčić …

 

Young artists regularly make their international debut in Berlin. Elsa Dreisig, member of the company, already has an incredible reputation (she won Operalia 2016, among others). We will certainly talk more about her, as well as about Anna Nechaeva in the title role of Manon Lescaut.
