A towering figure on the international music scene, Dudamel made a name for himself from the very start. In 1999, at just 18 years old, he became the conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar of Venezuela and of El Sistema, the acclaimed music education program that garnered worldwide praise. Global recognition soon followed. At the age of 23, he recorded his first album, dedicated to Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 5 and No. 7. Today, his discography boasts over 65 recordings and around 14 full albums.

Since the early 2000s, he has held the role of Music Director with leading institutions such as the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Opéra National de Paris (where he served as Music Director for two years), and, since 2023, the New York Philharmonic. Gustavo Dudamel also conducts orchestras across the globe, such as in Barcelona with the LSO.

Two vibrant and eclectic evenings are planned: on May 10, works by Ravel and Richard Strauss, featuring the sublime Marina Rebeka singing Shéhérazade; and on May 11, a program of Mozart and Mahler.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, a renowned star in the conducting world, music director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, artistic and music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal, honorary conductor of the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, and honorary member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, will conduct the iconic Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker 2025 for the very first time.

Regarding this, Daniel Froschauer, the orchestra’s chairman, stated: “In choosing Yannick Nézet-Séguin we seek to fulfil our goal of working more with the younger generation of conductors”. Yannick Nézet-Séguin will turn 50 on March 6, 2025.

Jérémie Rhorer, leading the Cercle de l’Harmonie—an ensemble in residence in Aix-en-Provence for eight years—will perform works by the two composers being honored in 2025. Johann Strauss II, the king of the waltz, will be celebrated on the 200th anniversary of his birth, while the 150th anniversary of Bizet’s death will be commemorated. Other composers like Offenbach, Gounod, and Delibes, who need no glitter to delight audiences, will also feature on the program.

Another highlight for the French conductor is the release of a recording on Alpha Classics dedicated to Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, presented during the 2024 Easter Festival with a vocal quartet featuring Chen Reiss, Varduhi Abrahamyan, Daniel Behle, and Tareq Nazmi.

Thus, a “Boulez Year” is on the horizon, already making waves in Germany, particularly in Baden-Baden, the musical city of the Black Forest. Boulez lived and worked there for more than 60 years and was named an honorary citizen of the town. The composer’s grave is also located in Baden-Baden‘s main cemetery.

An anniversary program is, of course, planned at the Festspielhaus, with a highlight scheduled for Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the centenary of his birth. The International Whitsun Festival PRÉSENCE, taking place from May 31 to June 9, 2025, will also be dedicated to him.

To mark the occasion, the Philharmonie de Paris is devoting to him an exhibition of a new kind for this major centre of French musical life. From December 3, 2024, to June 15, 2025, at the Musée de la Musique (Cité de la Musique), visitors will not see the usual displays on a composer’s life and works but rather an exploration of the creation and legacy of one piece—Ravel’s most iconic work: le Boléro!

Pierre Korzilius, the curator of the “Ravel Boléro” exhibition, offers an immersive audiovisual experience along with a display of the inspirations and genesis of the Boléro, presented through nearly 200 items, including manuscripts, photos, paintings, and costume sketches.

A series of concerts and lectures focused on Ravel’s work will also take place at the Philharmonie throughout the exhibition.

In November, Adams, who is also a conductor, will lead this celebrated ensemble (on November 14-16, 2024) in a program featuring works by Copland, Arvo Pärt, a New York premiere by Gabriella Smith, and City Noir, which Adams premiered in Los Angeles in 2009.

Adams isn’t leaving New York anytime soon, as in May 2025, the prestigious Metropolitan Opera will stage his latest opera, Antony and Cleopatra, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy. The production is directed by Elkhanah Pulitzer, with John Adams himself conducting the New York premiere from the orchestra pit.

After a European tour that took them to London and Bologna in October 2024, they will return to their all-Vivaldi program in Florence in November and then in Vilnius in December. Alongside the “Red Priest’s” cantatas, opera will also be in the spotlight during two exceptional performances of Rodelinda, one of Handel’s masterpieces.

Surrounded by Karina Gauvin and Giuseppina Bridelli, among others, Raffaele Pe (in the role of Bertarido and as conductor) is invited to perform at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien on November 18, 2024, and in Rome at the Parco della Musica on November 22, 2024. Vienna will welcome the countertenor again in May 2025 for a highly anticipated performance of Ambleto, a virtuosic opera by Francesco Gasparini, staged by Ilaria Lanzino.

Then, on January 16, 2025, the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris will follow with its new musical director. Thomas Hengelbrock, well-acquainted with the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, will conduct the Sixth Symphony, the only one of Bruckner’s orchestral works never revised.

A highlight of every season at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Wiener Philharmoniker will perform in Paris the next day, January 17, conducted by the legendary Zubin Mehta. The grandiose Ninth and unfinished final symphony is on the program. Finally, the dynamic Yannick Nézet-Séguin will close the mini cycle with the Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest on March 23, 2025, performing the Third Symphony, another masterpiece by the Master.
