After the broadcast of the Vienna New Year’s Concert, with champagne and petits fours barely digested, the Wiener Philharmoniker has just announced the name of the next guest conductor for the world’s most famous concert, watched by millions of viewers each year — and it’s a first!
Yannick Nézet-Séguin, a renowned star in the conducting world, music director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, artistic and music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal, honorary conductor of the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, and honorary member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, will conduct the iconic Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker 2025 for the very first time.
Regarding this, Daniel Froschauer, the orchestra’s chairman, stated: “In choosing Yannick Nézet-Séguin we seek to fulfil our goal of working more with the younger generation of conductors”. Yannick Nézet-Séguin will turn 50 on March 6, 2025.
