Daniel Barenboim drops the Staatsoper curtain

His state of health had prevented him from conducting since October 2022, but his return to the Berlin stage for the New Year’s Eve concerts gave reason to hope. Unfortunately, Daniel Barenboim, the legendary conductor and pianist, has just officially announced his retirement. The 80-year-old Music Director of the great German institution since 1992 will be leaving the Berlin Staatsoper on 31 January 2023, although his contract ran until 2027.

Suffering from a “serious neurological illness”, he said:  “Unfortunately my health condition significantly worsened in the last year. I can no longer deliver the performance rightly expected of a general musical director.”. His artist schedule remains unchanged at this time…
