Season 2016-2017: Teatro San Carlo (Naples, Italy)

Discover the 2016-2017 season!

The Teatro San Carlo in Naples is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful opera houses in Italy and even one of the finest theaters in the world. A visit to Naples is simply not complete without seeing an opera production or a concert. It is always advisable to book tickets in advance. Naturally, having a fabulous theatre doesn´t imply instant popularity, the program must still offer performances to match the beauty of the place.

Pending the arrival of Juraj Valcuha, its new music director (with Zubin Mehta as Honorary Director), the new 2016-2017 season gives pride to the Italian repertoire of past and present, while of course keeping a place for the international repertoire as well. This season, Carmen is programmed for July 2017, with the beautiful Kate Aldrich. In another style, Elektra Strauss is embodied by Nadja Michael, a moving and sensitive interpreter. The Teatro San Carlo in Naples has a rich history that continues to touch a fine cord, as the Serva Padrona by the Pergolesi (composer died at 26 in the vicinity of Naples). Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti is also one of the operas to see, more so because the work was created here. A double distribution meets Maria Grazia Schiavo or Gilda and Giuseppe Fiume Gipali or Saimir Pirgu. Achilles in Sciro by Domenico Sarro is on the program, as in 1737, for the inauguration of this fabulous opera house.

As can be understood, the 2016-2017 season is a season of celebration and festivity. Remarkably for Naples, the programming features less visited and therefore more risky performances as The Enchantress by Tchaikovsky (with the forces of the Mariinsky), the great Otello of Rossini (created here in 1816) which requests the voice of a tenor or even Adriana Lecouvreur by Cilea that is not so often performed. Of course, major works are also present like Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart (with Barbara Frittoli), Puccini’s La Bohème and La Traviata with casts that are always balanced.

But the Teatro San Carlo in Naples also has two major assets. The ballet company is famous in Italy and abroad and the works of the great choreographers as Roland Petit or Bigonzetti are presented as well as historical works by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. Another advantage is its orchestra (Orchestra del Teatro di San Carlo) allowing to develop a beautiful prestigious concert season. The arrival of such outstanding artists as Neville Marriner, Vadim Repin, Daniel Barenboim, Fabio Luisi, Yefim Bronfman, Piotr Anderszewski and Alexei Volodin gives enough reason to book your tickets early!
