Discover the 2016-2017 season!

The Vienna State Opera is one of the best institutions in Austria and certainly the richest hall of Europe. The wonderful director Dominique Meyer masters the subtle art of perfect distributions. The level of excellence is maintained every season to accommodate music lovers around the world who come to attend one of the 54 opera performances and 11 ballet evenings as programmed for 2016-2017. As always, the season is marked by new lyric productions. After Handel’s Alcina, the baroque adventure continues with Gluck’s Armide, entrusted to the exemplary duo, Ivan Alexander for staging and Marc Minkowski directing his Musiciens du Louvre and with an excellent distribution (Gaëlle Arquez, Stanislaus Barbeyrac , …).

Falstaff conducted by Zubin Mehta is embodied by the inevitable Ambrogio Maestri and Ludovic Tézier and Marie-Nicole Lemieux with David McVicar as stage director. In another masterpiece of Verdi , Il Trovatore, we find the splendid voice of Anna Netrebko, Roberto Alagna, Ludovic Tézier and Luciana D’Intino and the equally accomplished Nina Stemme in Parsifal. And last but not least, Pelléas et Mélisande is entrusted to the expert guidance of Alain Altinoglu. For dance, the new Wiener Staatsballet productions are signed Balanchine, Neumeier or Edwaard Liang and Daniel Proietto. Manuel Legris has put together a very nice season including his proper Corsaire choreography and also other masterpieces of the classical and neoclassical; Raymonda and Swan Lake by Nureyev, La Fille Mal Gardée of Frederick Ashton and Onegin by John Cranko but also works signed Christopher Wheeldon, Jerome Robbins, Kylián, Hans van Manen and John Neumeier.
Verdi, together with Wagner, is the composer most often represented on the program with  11 productions including Falstaff and Trovatore, a significant Simon Boccanegra with Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Ramon Vargas and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo. Also programmed, a tantalizing Ring by Wagner with the grand Bryn Terfel. Another wonderful bariton, Matthias Goerne, is distributed in Tristan und Isolde and Strauss’s Salome. Elektra is embodied by Nina Stemme opposite Waltraud Meier. These are just a few names and a tiny example of the imposing and impressive season. We should also mention that Ludovic Tézier will perform as Werther, Juan Diego Flórez as Gounod’s Romeo or the wonderful Jonas Kaufmann as Tosca.
