Simone’s real homecoming

The long-confined city of Sydney appointed the new Principal Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2020-2021, but Simone Young (the first woman to hold the post) was not able to lead her orchestra until July 2022, when the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall reopened. The upcoming 2023 season will therefore be her first full season as Chief Conductor. While she chose Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 ‘Resurrection’ to open the renovated hall, it is only natural that she should open her first season with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in the season-opening series of concerts from 8 to 11 February 2023 at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.
