As part of the Artist Spotlight series, the New York Philharmonic invites renowned voices to perform in recital. For Valentine’s Day, glamour will grace the stage of the Wu Tsai Theater, David Geffen Hall, as the guest artist is none other than soprano Renée Fleming.

Her accompanist has just been announced: the renowned pianist and long-time partner Jean-Yves Thibaudet. The program includes Fauré’s melodies set to Verlaine’s poetry, the demanding Poèmes pour Mi by Messiaen, as well as works by Reynaldo Hahn, Richard Strauss, and Alan Fletcher.

John Adams, New York’s New Master

At nearly 78, John Adams is one of the greatest living American composers. Unsurprisingly, the New York Philharmonic, one of the Big 5 orchestras in the US, is offering him an artistic partnership.

In November, Adams, who is also a conductor, will lead this celebrated ensemble (on November 14-16, 2024) in a program featuring works by Copland, Arvo Pärt, a New York premiere by Gabriella Smith, and City Noir, which Adams premiered in Los Angeles in 2009.

Adams isn’t leaving New York anytime soon, as in May 2025, the prestigious Metropolitan Opera will stage his latest opera, Antony and Cleopatra, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy. The production is directed by Elkhanah Pulitzer, with John Adams himself conducting the New York premiere from the orchestra pit.

Gustavo Dudamel on the Paris-New York

The popular Gustavo Dudamel, current music director of the Paris National Opéra, has just been officially appointed to lead the New York Philharmonic where he is expected in 2025-26 to start his first real season 2026-27. He will be the first Hispanic principal conductor since the orchestra was founded in 1842. The Venezuelan conductor who made his name with El Sistema will leave the Los Angeles Philharmonic after 17 years with this other renowned American orchestra.

Rattle, Salonen, Chailly, all at the Philharmonie!

January is a fruitful month for the Philharmonie de Paris, which welcomes three of the most prominent conductors. Sir Simon Rattle opens the ball on 14 and 15 January 2023 with the London Symphony Orchestra and two fine programmes, Sibelius/Bruckner then Beethoven/Stravinsky. The Orchestre de Paris meets Esa-Pekka Salonen on 25 and 26 January for the French premiere of his Organ Concerto (with Olivier Latry). Finally, the forces of La Scala de Milan led by Riccardo Chailly will be on stage at the Philharmonie on Sunday 29 January in a programme that is not Italian but Russian with Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky.

Tugan Sokhiev in Toulouse not in New-York

Double news for Tugan Sokhiev obliged to renounce to come to New York to conduct a concert on May 10-12, 2023, because of a schedule conflict (James Gaffigan is replacing him at the head of the New York Philharmonic). On the other hand, the Russian conductor who presided over the destiny of the Orchestre national du Capitole from 2008 to 2022 will return to the pink city at the Halle aux Grains on Saturday, March 18, 2023, this time at the head of the prestigious Wiener Philharmoniker in a Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky program. In addition, the Orchestre national du Capitole has announced the name of his replacement. The 22 year old Finnish conductor, Tarmo Peltokoski becomes the new Music Director of one of the best French orchestras.

Klaus without Truls in NYC

Klaus Mäkelä‘s impressive career takes him to New York from 8 to 10 December 2022, where the young conductor will make his debut with the New York Philharmonic.

With Truls Mørk unwell, a change of programme has been announced. Shostakovich‘s Cello Concerto No. 2 is replaced by the Symphony No. 6 by the same composer, which means twice as much Mäkelä alone on the podium!

Sound problems finally solved in New York?

The New York Philharmonic, one of America’s greatest orchestras, still did not have a concert hall worthy of its status. Indeed, on the site of Lincoln Center, the current David Geffen Hall (formerly called Philharmonic Hall and then Avery Fisher Hall) was inaugurated in 1962 with acoustics that have never convinced music lovers. This October, back in the completely refurbished venue with new spaces, they will be able to test the work of Paul Scarbrough of Akustiks who reduced the number of seats by 500 to move the stage forward to improve the acoustics.

On February 20–22, 2020, at Lincoln Center the famous soprano Renée Fleming Perform Björk’s Virus and All Is Full of Love and selections from Anders Hillborg’s The Strand Settings. Music Director Jaap van Zweden also conducts a world premiere of Ellen Reid and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4.
