At Almost 150 Years Old, Ravel Exhibits His Boléro

The year 2025 will be a grand celebration of Ravel, who would have turned 150 on March 7.

To mark the occasion, the Philharmonie de Paris is devoting to him an exhibition of a new kind for this major centre of French musical life. From December 3, 2024, to June 15, 2025, at the Musée de la Musique (Cité de la Musique), visitors will not see the usual displays on a composer’s life and works but rather an exploration of the creation and legacy of one piece—Ravel’s most iconic work: le Boléro!

Pierre Korzilius, the curator of the “Ravel Boléro” exhibition, offers an immersive audiovisual experience along with a display of the inspirations and genesis of the Boléro, presented through nearly 200 items, including manuscripts, photos, paintings, and costume sketches.

A series of concerts and lectures focused on Ravel’s work will also take place at the Philharmonie throughout the exhibition.

A Big Shaw, Finally in Paris!

Caroline Shaw is a complete artist. A renowned composer, violinist, and singer, she is the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music, which she won in 2013 for Partita for 8 Voices at the age of thirty! From November 20 to 23, 2024, the Philharmonie de Paris is dedicating a series of concerts to her so that the French public can become better acquainted with the American artist. Klaus Mäkelä, leading the Orchestre de Paris, will ensure the French premiere of The Observatory (November 20 and 21, Grande salle Pierre Boulez). On the 22nd, excerpts from Partita for 8 Voices will be performed by the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth (Salle des concerts – Cité de la musique). Finally, Caroline Shaw herself will take the stage, accompanied by Gabriel Kahane, to perform Hexagons, a piece they co-wrote together.

Sonya Yoncheva and William Christie, mind your head!

A return to her roots for the voluptuous soprano Sonya Yoncheva, who reunites with William Christie after participating in one of the early editions of Le Jardin des Voix, the academy for young singers by Les Arts Florissants. On November 1, 2024, at the Philharmonie de Paris, November 5 at La Halle aux Grains in Toulouse, and November 7 in Compiègne, the artist, accompanied by Les Arts Florissants conducted by William Christie, will perform arias by Mozart, Gluck, Sacchini, Cherubini, Piccinni, Chardin, and Martini. This head-spinning program revives the beloved works of Queen Marie-Antoinette’s repertoire.

Roberto Alagna Creates a Buzz Once Again!

After celebrating his 61st birthday on June 7, 2024 and preparing to celebrate his 40-year career with the release of a special box set featuring 33 CDs—the complete collection of his opera recordings for Warner Classics (originally published by EMI Classics, Virgin Classics, Warner Classics, and Erato)—Roberto Alagna, the unique, radiant superstar, will perform in concert alongside another major star of the opera world at the Philharmonie de Paris on Monday, September 23, 2024. On this occasion, Giorgio Croci, at the helm of the Belgian National Orchestra, will conduct arias and duets by Bizet, Donizetti, Moniuszko, Verdi, and Wagner with Ludovic Tézier, who, after Jonas Kaufmann, seems to be collecting the greatest tenors in the world!

Bar Avni a new Conductor’s name to remember

The third edition of the La Maestra International Competition for Women Conductors, held from 14 to 17 March 2024 at the Philharmonie de Paris, has just crowned Bar Avni. The 34-year-old Israeli conductor also walked away with almost all the other special prizes awarded during the competition: Prix des Salles et Orchestres français, Prix Echo (awarded by the European Concert Hall network), Prix Arte (from the Franco-German television channel) and the Prix du Paris Mozart Orchestra. Second place went to Liubov Nosova (30) representing Russia. Finally, 29-year-old German conductor Katharina Morin took third prize and the Prix Génération Opéra awarded by the Centre français de promotion lyrique. The jury for La Maestra 2024 was chaired by Nathalie Stutzmann, Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and still the only female conductor to lead a major orchestra in the United States.

The Philharmonie doubles up on International Women’s Rights Day

On Saturday 9 March 2024, the day after International Women’s Rights Day, the Philharmonie de Paris is hosting a forum entitled “Matrimoine: (pour) faire genre?” Throughout the day, round tables, discussions and interviews will be held with special guests such as historian Michelle Perrot, cellist Héloïse Luzzati, founder and director of the Elles Women Composers association, Claire Bodin, director of the Présence Compositrices resource and promotion centre, and many other speakers who will be discussing, among other things, the place of women composers in French programming or the “silences of History”. Although many female composers are being rediscovered, the place of women in classical music is still a hot topic. Of the thirty opera houses in France, only four are headed by women. On the symphony side, just over 10% of orchestras are conducted by women. Although there have never been so many, we are still a long way from parity…

No return for Gardiner

After the altercation that shook the entire musical sphere this summer, John Eliot Gardiner cancelled all his concerts and was due to return to the stage in spring 2024. The conductor has just announced that he is extending his absence while accepting full responsibility for his actions, which he says he deeply regrets. The Beethoven cycle scheduled for 25 to 29 May 2024 at the Philharmonie de Paris will be conducted by Dinis Sousa, the young and talented conductor associated with Gardiner’s three ensembles. In Barcelona, Masaaki Suzuki and Peter Whelan will replace him on stage.

Pogorelich returns to Paris and Chopin

A sensitive pianist if ever there was one, Ivo Pogorelich makes his grand return to Paris in the famous Piano**** series on 7 November 2023. The Grande Salle Pierre Boulez at the Philharmonie de Paris welcomes the artist for an all-Chopin recital, including the Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58. Chopin and Pogorelich, a great story that had its famous drama at the Warsaw Competition, where his elimination made him a legend.

After his hugely successful performance as Posa in Geneva’s Don Carlos, Stéphane Degout is continuing his love affair with the public, who will soon see him again at the Philharmonie de Paris, on 12 October 2023, in Georges Benjamin’s opera Lessons in Love and Violence. The music lover’s favourite contemporary composer composed this opera with his brilliant librettist Martin Crimp for a new masterpiece to be discovered for the first time in Paris.

A war of chefs in Paris?

Are the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Philharmonie, the French capital’s two great symphony concert halls, fighting it out in 2023? The line-up on both sides is very strong, with, Porte de Pantin, the Berliner Philharmoniker led by Kirill Petrenko (2 September), the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Klaus Mäkelä (6 and 7 September) and the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons (8 September) despite on Avenue Montaigne, three serious contenders such as the Wiener Philharmoniker led by Jakub Hrůša (14th), Riccardo Chailly at the helm of the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala (12th) and finally the Bayerisches Staatsorchester conducted by Vladimir Jurowski (21st) round off the calendar for an exceptional new season. François-Xavier Roth, Lahav Shani, Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Thomas Hengelbrock, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, etc. are also expected in the coming month!
