The Benjamin of yesterday and tomorrow

At 63, George Benjamin is one of the most prominent composers of our time. After the huge success of Written on Skin, premiered in 2012 in Aix-en-Provence, Lessons in Love and Violence, his third opera, premiered in London in 2018, will be performed at the Zurich Opera House from 21 May to 11 June 2023 with Jeanine De Bique and Lauri Vasar (as Edward II). Music lovers can then go to the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, at the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume, where Benjamin’s new opera Picture a day like this will have its world premiere on 5 July 2023 (on stage until 23 July). The composer reunites with his faithful librettist Martin Crimp for the fourth time with a production directed by Daniel Jeanneteau and Marie-Christine Soma with a video installation by Hicham Berrada. He himself conducts the production at the head of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Marianne Crebassa and Anna Prohaska in the main roles.
