Upheaval at Mozart

As the Mozartwoche 2023 prepares to open its doors on January 26, 2023 in Salzburg, its charming artistic director, the truculent Rolando Villazón, is faced with the predictable cancellation of Daniel Barenboim. The pianist and conductor is unwell and has to give up conducting the Vienna Philharmonic and performing with his friend Martha Argerich.

The concert on 28 January 2023 is not cancelled and it is now Robin Ticciati who conducts Mozart’s double Concerto K 365 where the great Martha is now joined by the no less great Maria João Pires. Marc Minkowski conducts the concert on 1 February and Thomas Guggeis (Barenboim’s former assistant) the one on 4 February with the Requiem, an absolute masterpiece, where it is no longer Nadine Sierra who is performing the soprano part but cute Lisette Oropesa.
