You have to wait two more days to acquire a rare album devoted to French women composers thanks to the Palazzetto Bru Zane, which is publishing a boxed set of 8 discs built around their works that have been ignored for too long. Today (International Women’s Rights Day), we should remember that even the French term “compositrices” was not appropriate in the 19th century, when women had great difficulty in expressing themselves and obtaining recognition during their lifetime. Twenty-one Romantic women composers have emerged from the shadows (Mel Bonis, Lili and Nadia Boulanger, Marthe Bracquemond, Cécile Chaminade, Hedwige Chrétien, Marie-Foscarine Damaschino, Jeanne Danglas, Louise Farrenc, Clémence de Grandval, Marthe Grumbach, Augusta Holmès, Madeleine Jaeger, Marie Jaëll, Madeleine Lemariey, Hélène de Montgeroult, Virginie Morel, Henriette Renié, Charlotte Sohy, Rita Strohl &, Pauline Viardot) and we hope that their works will be now a natural choice on the program of all concert halls and opera houses.
