Season 2016-2017: Opéra Bastille (Paris)

Discover the 2016-2017 season!

After an outstanding 2015-2016 season in more than one ways, the question arose whether Stéphane Lissner would be able to keep Paris in the elite circle of the world capitals of the Opera. Considering the new 2016-2017 season, this bet is won again and if possible, aiming even higher. What makes the grandness of an institution? Its ability to attract the greatest singers in the world, to propose daring bets and to consolidate its repertoire with enticing distributions. With its Ballet company, one of the most prestigious in the world, the Opera Bastille in Paris can afford to offer great works on the repertoire such as Swan Lake by Nureyev, masterpieces rarely staged such as Midsummer Night Dream by Balanchine or even attempt modernity with a big name in contemporary dance (Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, in this case).

Regarding opera, successful stages always require a cast of famous voices to renew its attraction. Tosca is sung by the exceptional Anja Harteros or the beautiful discovery liudmyla monastyrska and with them, two of the greatest singers, Marcelo Alvarez and Bryn Terfel. And what should we say about the repetition of Eugene Onegin? Peter Mattei is an impressive and unique artist and in this role. Opposite him, two stars just as flamboyant alternate in the role of Tatiana, Anna Netrebko and Sonya Yoncheva.

Do not hesitate to book your seats at the Bastille opera as soon as possible, since the presence of Jonas Kaufmann twice this season is an event with consequences around the world, especially with regard to roles such as Lohengrin or Hoffmann. His name alone could be enough to fill the room but the luxury is in the details of a distribution where there are other big stars as René Pape or Ermonela Jaho. In the highly anticipated new productions, the masterpiece of Saint-Saëns’ Samson and Delilah finds its place on the program with as a bonus the inspiring and delicate Philippe Jordan. Sancta Susanna by Hindemith is quite an adventure, but with Anna Caterina Antonacci one can rest assured. Similarly, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Snegurotchka is very little known by the French and still remains one of the most anticipated performances of the season because it is signed Dmitry Chernyakov.

There is place for audacity in the program, but there are also safe bets such as Bizet’s Carmen with Roberto Alagna, the magnificent. Another exceptional season at the Paris Opera is ready to take off.
