]]> After the usual summer break, which is always too long for music lovers, the 2025/2026 season at the Opéra-Comique opens on 25 September 2025 with Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann), Jacques Offenbach‘s only opera and absolute masterpiece. Lotte de Beer‘s production comes from Strasbourg, where it premiered last January at the Opéra national du Rhin.

Offenbach, the undisputed master of opéra bouffe during the Second Empire, reveals a whole new side to his artistic genius in this work. Based on the fantastical short stories of E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Tales of Hoffmann is an opera that brings together several tales about the unhappy loves of the writer, an iconic figure of European Romanticism. Unfortunately, Offenbach died before seeing his work performed on stage at the Opéra-Comique. Several revisions and additions that have been made to the work are both a real headache for musicologists and a veritable playground. There are several versions of The Tales that the German director explores.

This new production marks the return of an essential masterpiece to the Opéra-Comique repertoire. A regular at the institution, tenor Michael Spyres plays Hoffmann, opposite his Muse, played by Héloïse Mas. Conducting, Pierre Dumoussaud confirms his status as a leading interpreter of the Offenbach repertoire. Performances will run from 25 September to 5 October 2025 and are set to be one of the highlights of the opera season.

]]> On January 10, 2025, celebrations will take place at the Grand Théâtre de Provence with a New Year’s concert, whose program has just been unveiled.

Jérémie Rhorer, leading the Cercle de l’Harmonie—an ensemble in residence in Aix-en-Provence for eight years—will perform works by the two composers being honored in 2025. Johann Strauss II, the king of the waltz, will be celebrated on the 200th anniversary of his birth, while the 150th anniversary of Bizet’s death will be commemorated. Other composers like Offenbach, Gounod, and Delibes, who need no glitter to delight audiences, will also feature on the program.

Another highlight for the French conductor is the release of a recording on Alpha Classics dedicated to Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, presented during the 2024 Easter Festival with a vocal quartet featuring Chen Reiss, Varduhi Abrahamyan, Daniel Behle, and Tareq Nazmi.

]]> Their December 2022 visit to Paris brought spectators at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées to tears. This winter, the ballet and orchestra of the National Opera of Ukraine are returning for 17 exceptional performances from December 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025, on the Avenue Montaigne stage.

Despite enduring extremely difficult living and working conditions for well-known, tragic reasons, the company will present The Snow Queen, a ballet inspired by Hans Christian Andersen‘s tale, set to music by Grieg, Massenet, Offenbach, Johann Strauss, and Berlioz.

Featuring the soloists and ballet corps of the National Opera of Ukraine, the performance will also include the Prométhée Orchestra, conducted by Sergii Golubnychyi, in choreography by Aniko Rekhviashvili, who directed the company from 2013 to 2019.

]]> While performances of Pascal Dusapin’s Macbeth Underworld have just ended at the Opéra Comique, its director Thomas Jolly is not leaving the Salle Favart, as the production of Offenbach’s Fantasio will be revived from 13 to 23 December 2023. Premiered in 2017 at the Théâtre du Châtelet during the renovation of the Opéra-Comique, this production marked his very first operatic engagement. The show returns to the venue that inspired it, starring the superb Gaëlle Arquez as Fantasio and the no less exceptional Jodie Devos as Princess Elsbeth.

In 1902, the eruption of Mount Pelee completely devastated the city, which retains the ruins as a trace of its glorious past.

For its fourth edition, under the artistic direction of Fabrice di Falco, the FILAO Festival will revive opera by offering Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann sung by the talents of the Voix des Outre-mer in the ruins of the Saint-Pierre Theater. From 15 to 18 December 2022, the appointment is made, destination Saint-Pierre in Martinique!

Intense musicological work on Offenbach is bearing fruit on the stage with the exhumation of the complete original 1866 version (never heard before) of the Opéra-bouffe masterpiece, Offenbach’s La Vie Parisienne. For the first time, the famous designer Christian Lacroix is directing. The opera will be performed at the Opéra de Rouen from 7 to 13 November 2021, at the Opéra de Tours from 3 to 7 December and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées for 16 performances from 21 December 2021 to 9 January 2022.
