After a rich Fauré Year in 2024, celebrating the centenary of the famous composer’s passing, a major event is on the horizon.

The Requiem, an absolute masterpiece by Fauré and a cornerstone of Western musical literature, will be conducted by Raphaël Pichon at the helm of Ensemble Pygmalion during a European tour from May 11 to 20, 2025.

The conductor, currently one of the most sought-after on the international scene, and his breathtaking ensemble are highly anticipated in this work—especially with the exceptional cast Pichon has assembled. Baritone Stéphane Degout is undoubtedly one of the finest interpreters of Fauré’s Requiem, alongside soprano Sabine Devieilhe, whose crystalline timbre will shine in the Pie Jesu.

As a bonus, the conductor had the brilliant idea of bringing these two great French stars together for excerpts from Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas, following their immense success on the Opéra-Comique stage in 2022.

Unfortunately, French audiences who have not yet secured their tickets for this Requiem for Ophélie may be disappointed. The Auditorium de Bordeaux on May 15, 2025, and the Philharmonie de Paris on May 20 are already sold out! To avoid missing the event, they will have to rush for the last remaining seats in Vienna (Konzerthaus, May 17), Valencia (Palau de la Música), or Madrid (Teatro Real)—fingers crossed!

Premiered in Paris at the Opéra Comique on April 30, 1902, Claude Debussy’s masterpiece Pelléas et Mélisande took several decades to enter the repertoire of the Opéra national de Paris, debuting there on March 18, 1977. Similarly, Sabine Devieilhe has waited before taking on this iconic role in a staged production.

Having already performed it in concert, the divine soprano will finally grace the stage as Mélisande in a new production at France’s premier opera house, running from February 28 to March 27, 2025. This much-anticipated event marks the return of celebrated theater director Wajdi Mouawad to the Opéra Bastille, following his acclaimed staging of Enescu’s Œdipe. Special care has been taken with the cast surrounding Sabine Devieilhe: the dazzling young baritone Huw Montague Rendall, a rising star, will portray Pelléas, with Gordon Bintner as Golaud, alongside Sophie Koch and Jean Teitgen as Geneviève and Arkel.

On January 9, 2025, Viennese director Otto Schenk passed away at the age of 94.

He left an indelible mark on the world of opera with his remarkable productions, which have been performed across the global opera stage. The Met Opera in New York fondly remembers his grand Wagner productions, just as the Wiener Staatsoper continues to preserve his legacy.

This season, in addition to the recordings made freely available on the Austrian opera’s website, audiences can experience his stagings of Fidelio by Beethoven in February 2025 (featuring Michael Spyres and Bryn Terfel), L’elisir d’amore by Donizetti in March (with Nadine Sierra and Xabier Anduaga), Andrea Chénier by Giordano in April (starring Michael Fabiano, Sonya Yoncheva, and Luca Salsi), and finally, arguably his greatest masterpiece, Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss in June (with Lise Davidsen, Emily D’Angelo, and Sabine Devieilhe). Another iconic production, J. Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, has returned annually every December since 1979.

The 2024-2025 season at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is special for many reasons. It marks the final season curated by Michel Franck, the vibrant artistic director who has been at the helm since 2010. To celebrate, he has prepared a dazzling lineup that will delight all music lovers. Some events are bound to be highly sought after, so it is particularly important to book tickets in advance this season, especially for the operas.

The 2024-2025 season at the TCE encapsulates Michel Franck’s artistic choices. He has always been adept at presenting a wide range of repertoires, with perhaps a slight preference for baroque music. Opera enthusiasts are especially spoiled this season with offerings like Handel‘s magnificent masterpiece, Semele, featuring the beloved soprano Pretty Yende. This new production by Olivier Mears, directed by Emmanuelle Haïm, promises to be a highlight. France’s premier tenor, the dynamic Benjamin Bernheim, will perform his first Parisian Werther, staged by Christof Loy, alongside the impressive mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti. Viotti also stars in another major production, Der Rosenkavalier, an eagerly anticipated event with Marlis Petersen and Regula Mühlemann.

A noteworthy event is the revival of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, directed by Olivier Py. Patricia Petibon, who previously moved audiences as Blanche de la Force, now takes on the role of Mère Marie, symbolizing the continuity and transmission of operatic history. The season also features acclaimed soprano Anna Netrebko, and eagerly anticipated recitals by Philippe Jaroussky, Pretty Yende, and Jakub Józef Orliński.

Concert versions of operatic works will undoubtedly generate the most excitement. Highlights include Julien Chauvin’s presentation of Handel‘s La Resurrezione and Jephtha with an outstanding cast including Michael Spyres, Joyce DiDonato, Mélissa Petit, and Francesco Corti.

The International Opera Awards 2022, founded in 2013 by Harry Hyman, a British businessman, and John Allison, editor of the British magazine Opera, were presented earlier this week at the Teatro Real in Madrid, outside the UK for the first time in their history. Sabine Devieilhe and Stéphane Degout were chosen as Best Singers of the Year. The remarkable artists are both French, so there’s plenty of national pride (and legendary arrogance) to go around!

She is scheduled to appear in Handel’s Alcina at the Palais Garnier from 28 November to 17 December 2021 as Morgana for the first time. She will then fly to Munich to perform as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte from 21 to 30 December 2021 at the Nationaltheater, before returning to Paris at the Opéra Comique. She will again performed as Ophelia in the revival of Ambroise Thomas’ sensational Hamlet (starring baritone Stéphane Degout) from 24 January 2022 to 3 February 2022. But her news does not stop there, since on the same day she released Rameau’s Achante et Céphise (with Alexis Kossenko on Erato) and a Bach/Handel recital conducted by Raphaël Pichon (also on Erato).
