]]> From November 19 to 30, 2024, London, Luxembourg, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, Amsterdam, Munich, and Vienna will welcome Venezuelan maestro Rafael Payare for a grand celebration! The new Music Director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra will embark on a European tour to celebrate the orchestra’s 90th anniversary, founded exactly on November 16, 1934.
Payare, who follows in the footsteps of renowned conductors such as Igor Markevitch, Zubin Mehta (appointed at just 24), Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Charles Dutoit, or Kent Nagano, will be joined on this tour by another great artist, pianist Daniil Trifonov. Together, they will perform a classical and romantic repertoire featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann, Berlioz, and Richard Strauss.

]]> Although he remains the world’s most famous gambist, Jordi Savall is an exciting conductor, leading the Hespèrion XXI ensemble in medieval, Renaissance and Baroque repertoire and Le Concert des Nations in repertoire ranging from Baroque to Romanticism. The great artist is also artistic director of a festival that bears his name. The next Jordi Savall Festival will take place from 12 to 18 April 2024 in the heart of Catalonia, in Santes Creus (near Tarragona). The programme includes concerts in thousand-year-old places imagined by the master Savall, with music ranging from the Middle Ages to contemporary music, and an astonishing Ravel concert and the music that inspired him (on 17 August).

]]> 2023 is the year of Maria Callas, because on 2 December she would have been 100 years old. Tributes to the Diva assoluta have already been paid around the world (notably in Athens, where she made her debut), but Paris is rolling out the finest red carpet with a gala evening on 2 December 2023, D-Day, which promises to be exceptional. Returning to the splendour of prestigious evenings, director Robert Carsen has devised a tribute show featuring the superb soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and a number of prestigious colleagues whose names are still being kept secret. The conductor will be Eun Sun Kim.

]]> 8 March is indeed Women’s Rights Day, but the ‘Les Grandes Voix’ concert series has not waited to put women in the spotlight! During the month of March 2023, it is offering two unusual and exceptional events. On Monday 6 March 2023, Nadine Sierra and Pretty Yende will share the stage at the Philharmonie de Paris in a programme simply entitled “Best Friends”. On Tuesday 21 March 2023, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées will welcome women of power with Marina Rebeka and Karine Deshayes performing excerpts from Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena, Rossini’s Elisabetta and Semiramide and finally excerpts from Bellini’s Norma.

]]> Since the beginning of the season, the Palazzetto Bru Zane, a great rediscoverer of scores (which is releasing a boxed set of 8CDs in March 2023 and a book on Augusta Holmès), has been devoting a series of concerts to 19th century French women composers: Louise Farrenc, Rita Strohl, Clémence de Grandval, Nadia and Lili Boulanger, Cécile Chaminade, Charlotte Sohy, Augusta Holmès, Mel Bonis, Sophie Gail, Marie Jaëll, Henriette Renié,…. After a festival to be held in Venice from 1 April to 17 June 2023, the highlights are expected in Paris where, as part of the Palazzetto Bru Zane’s Parisian festival, three concerts will be held, including Louise Bertin’s opera Fausto on 20 June and a symphonic concert on 23 June at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

]]> It is now official, the flamboyant pianist Khatia Buniatishvili is expecting a happy event. The many fans she did not choose to be the father of her child will undoubtedly be heartbroken, as will the audience at Carnegie Hall where she was expected to perform on 11 May 2023. Rest assured, the concert has been rescheduled for October 19. Many venues will probably have to do the same, as the superb pianist’s schedule is always very busy.

]]> While the Bozar in Brussels opens the ball of the Rachmaninov 2023 festivities (on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth), the Opernhaus Zürich and the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich are joining forces for a concert cycle that begins on 12 February 2023, at the Opera House. The Piano Concerto No. 3 will be performed by Yefim Bronfman. On 29 and 30 March, the Tonhalle will host Yuja Wang in Concerto No. 2. On this occasion, the music directors of the two institutions, Gianandrea Noseda and Paavo Järvi, who have been friends for many years, will share the performances as well as their respective orchestras (Philharmonia Zürich and Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich).

]]> The long-confined city of Sydney appointed the new Principal Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2020-2021, but Simone Young (the first woman to hold the post) was not able to lead her orchestra until July 2022, when the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall reopened. The upcoming 2023 season will therefore be her first full season as Chief Conductor. While she chose Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 ‘Resurrection’ to open the renovated hall, it is only natural that she should open her first season with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in the season-opening series of concerts from 8 to 11 February 2023 at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.

The four piano concertos of the virtuoso composer, his chamber music and his moving Vespers will be performed by the Belgian National Orchestra, the Latvian Radio Choir and great artists such as pianists Nikolai Lugansky, Bezhod Abduraimov, Denis Kozhukhin and conductor Cristian Măcelaru.
